I curbed my damn rim!

I am not advocating for neglecting clear coat; just saying it takes more than a single winter to compromise exposed alloy. So, "no rush". Fix the damage first, then look into clear coat; you don't have to do both at the same time. You don't have to wait to make the rash look healed if you don't know how to clear coat yet, or don't have the product yet. Some time going by in between sanding and clear coating is not going to ruin the wheel.

@MerlintheMad You, sir, are a true Stinger Renaissance Man! Perhaps the most knowledgeable – and the most prolific – contributor here. Plus you clearly have a ton of experience on cosmetic wheel repair. I have a bit of curb rash on one of my OEM wheels (plus more heinous bruises on my winter rims) and I plan to use your repair advice. I will suggest, however, that when on curbed streets and parking lots, more attention be paid to the apex. ;) :)

Merlin is there a recommended clear coat for wheels?
Danged if I know. I never got around to applying any clear coat before I powder coated mine gloss black. But as you subsequently say, there's a clear coat for anything. My suspicion is that on cars, clear coat is clear coat; it gets marketed for dedicated applications but there is little if any difference between them. But, if I were going to clear coat wheels, I'd be shopping for "wheel clear coat" and not trying to use clear coat that comes in paint repair kits.

I am the most knowledgeable about curbing and sanding down wheels, in my experience. That's not a recommendation, is it? I post fast (I also claim to pass fast:P). Also, I have a lot of free time. So there is no "perhaps" about being the most prolific poster on the Stinger Forum. Somebody has to do it, and it fell to me. I reckon I'm the most surprised by that of anyone.

Since the eBay vendor is sold out of that kit which cost $40.00 I said screw it id build my own little kit which came out to pretty much $30.00 and change. Earlier in the day I'd sent out a few RFQ's on yelp and found a guy that pretty much repairs and paints rims for a living. What was interesting is he gave me two options..repair the curb for $65 or redo the rim to factory condition for $120. What he pointed out is that the stinger wheels are machined as if they have lines running through them....at first I thought the guy was tripping until I zoomed in on my own photo. Told him I could care less cause I never noticed it until he pointed it out and I'll see him Saturday @9am.

Glad you got it sorted. Good luck with the repair.

Yep, machined line pattern: I knew it before I curbed my first wheel the first time. And I knew that sanding the rash down would destroy the machined lines. Like you, I could care less (but not much). From five, six feet away you can't see any damage unless you know it's there, and even then hardly. (Of course, now it's all under gloss black powder coat, so moot.)

I'm pretty sure it won't be noticeable to anyone but me once repaired. I'm just so disappointed in myself for doing it. Saddest part of it all is that I've done it once or twice with almost every car I've owned

Curbed mine last week. A long graze. Like you ... first time in 10 years! Was trying to re-park away from the car next to me. Didnt pull out far enough ... no LOS with the curb ... so missed my objective. Going to buy new wheels and tires come Spring so I'll live with it ... for now.:D

Like you ... first time in 10 years!
Me, much longer ago then ten years. I don't remember the last time I curbed a wheel, before last summer, fall, and winter! Heh!? This car's dimensions have seriously messed with me. Since the last incident, a mere month or so ago (with the slightest brush of the RF wheel, which I "repaired" immediately, damage was slight), I give myself even more wiggle room. And I've sworn off adjusting to "get closer". It's just not worth it.

V , it would be great to take several pics during the "fix" and post them to demo the process for everyone .... good luck and good call !!

One more solution to consider - RimBlades (a plastic ring that glues to the rim). Hides existing damage and *may* mitigate any future damage ;)

I've kerbed a wheel three times in my life; two of those times the vehicle was virtually brand new - had less than 1000 kilometres on the odometer! Typical.

Everyone makes mistakes (and your wheel has the lightest damage I've ever seen, I'm not sure if it even qualifies as 'damage'). Don't be too hard on yourself.

I purchased the Road Hazard Plus warranty which states they would replace and repair tire/rims, dents, cracks in wield shield. Is there any truth to this? did anyone else purchase this package and have experience with it. If so, after seeing your picture, I feel a little better about dishing another 1600 other for it.

Well I may have an out and some other people may as well. I noticed when I bought the car at night two rough spots the size of dimes on each front rim. Well I didn't think much of it until I looked at them recently them again and realized these spots are now turning white. I was fortunate to find a picture of new rims from the factory with some stickers. Now I'm guessing these stickers were placed on before the clear coat / paint tried. When they got removed from the dealer it must have ripped off the clear coat? Regardless I will be going to the dealership to see what they're going to do.
