Ok so here is what you need for this to work:

A rooted phone between android 6 and android 8.9.
There is many ways to root, plenty of youtube videos. Try these. Once rooted, in your phone settings go to about phone and tap on build number 7 or 8 times until it says you've unlocked developer options. Go back and into developer options and make sure usb debugging is on. Now back out and go into security, make sure unknown sources is checked. Download the phenotype patcher (AA_Phenotype_Patcher_0.4.apk) from your phone's browser. It IS an apk so it will be able to install. Download AA mirror plus (https://drive.google.com/uc?authuser...xport=download) and your JB4 app. Install both apps then run the phenotype patcher. Click the top right corner and click apps list. Now click AA mirror, AA mirror plus, phenotype patcher and android auto. Open the AA mirror app, click screen settings and change rotation to FORCE and 90 degrees. Plug into your car, tap android auto, tap the little app switcher gauge icon, and select AA mirror plus. There you go!

Proof it's working.

Anyone know why this can't just be done without having to root a phone? We can cast to TV's and other devices but why can't we cast to a car infotainment screen with a factory software loaded phone?

Safety restrictions. They dont want people driving and not being focused on the road.

Can you imagine how many people would use Android Auto as a DVD player? Streaming football games, watching Netflix, perusing Pornhub... It would make texting while driving seem responsible.

... and despite concerns of law suits from vehicle manufacturers, a guy beheaded himself by letting his Tesla drive while he watched a Harry Potter movie on his portable DVD player.

It's the litigious society that prevents seemingly reasonable features.

Why can't an app be downloaded instead of rooting the phone?
(I'm not real familiar on rooting phones or how it makes screen sharing possible to a car)

Because the officially supported operating systems don't allow it, hence why you have to "hack" (root) it.

I know this is an old thread but I'm hoping someone will see this and be able to help with a couple questions.

I'm trying to do the above on my LG V40. I've download Phenotype Patcher and JB4 as well as AA Mirror Plus. Only thing I'm missing is AA Mirror and I didn't see where it was mentioned to find and download?

LG has a terrible track record of using up to date versions of Android but even the V40 has 9.0, right?

I used to download music videos from YouTube, burn them to a DVD, and play them on my screen. Some of the videos might have well have been a porn. lmao

Have an old Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge but I've been unable to find a way to root it to do this. Anyone good at rooting?

I'm pretty sure Rooting Your Phone is a video on PornHub.

Rooting down here only has one meaning, it evolves hiding the ol' pork baton.
