How do you remove the radio knob?

The volume knob is cracked. I have the replacement and it looks like it's held in with a retaining ring that I assume should just release if pulled hard enough, but it doesn't seem to want to come off. So I'm looking for confirmation, does it just pull straight off with enough force or is there something else holding it on?

Can you share a picture of the new knob with the retaining ring?

The ring is pretty deep into the knob. That black plastic skirt extends beyond the clear plastic parts. But I absolutely can't just pull and get the old knob off.

That ring has to be what's holding the knob on. Try two pry tools from opposite sides under the bottom edge, and twist them gently at the same time. I bet the broken knob will pop right off.

There's absolutely no access to that ring with the knob on the stereo. I guess I will have to totally break the knob that's on the car now into pieces.

you don't access that ring. this knob is 100% friction fit.

The black plastic skirt on the knob is recessed behind the face plate of the stereo. I'll see if I can get a piece of string or something under it but unfortunately it's not as easy as that guitar example.

Well, that is a new thing I never noticed before, almost six years in. Obviously, KIA doesn't want us to do this one. And I would be taking the job to them.

Warranty is over, I'm in DIY mode.

I figured that. But this DIY looks like a good chance to mark up your panel. Unless some video at YouTube University reveals how to do it, and it's easy, it isn't worth the risk.

Just to close this out. I used a pair of pliers. It comes out if you can get a good purchase on it. Here's the crack. You can see the marks that the pliers made in the knurl as well. It would be tough to do this if you wanted to reuse the knob.

Also I took a side shot to show how deep the knob goes.

Going back on, the knob has to be clocked correctly.

Did some research on this and a lot of people have tried getting these things off to no avail.

They seem to be a one use product. Push on to stay on

Break to take off.

$14.

Same part number is used across the Hyundai/Kia range. 96173 - XXXX

Does the crack impede the knob's function? Could you have filled the crack and painted everything over instead?

Function was fine. Aesthetics bothered me. These are aluminum metal deposition finish. Can't be replicated with paint.

But you can come close, especially on an edge like that. I used "aluminum" color airbrush paint on the top grab handle edge, which I noticed in direct sunlight was starting to show the white plastic through. It looks better than white plastic showing through, that's about all. The touchup is not invisible by any stretch.

It was cracked because somebody probably tried to take off.

For a $14 replaceable item you don't try to repair it you throw it away
