Hello everyone; I am new to this forum. I am looking for some significant input on what to buy. I love the stinger, especially the looks, and have driven a 2019 gt1. However, I have also driven a 2022 and 2020 m340i drive and can not decide what car to buy. Looking for input from stinger owners if they have ever switched from BMW to stinger and what they love about the car. I know this is all preference, but I would love to hear some input on why people like their stinger. I also love the BMW for the driving experience and the exhaust, interior, and handling, although I am not sure about the maintenance end. No one seems to have a clear answer on the long-term of the m340i and the b58 engine. I have heard they are reliable, but it's a BMW, so.. Anyways, I would love to hear anyone's personal experience on what it's like to live with the car. It would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy and welcome. I can sum up my opinion simply by saying that if the Stinger had not been a liftback with the cargo cubic feet of two refrigerators, I would never have given it a second look. Everything else, after being practical, simply checked enough boxes to make me get one (including sound system, performance, looks, comfort, even luxury). The price of a BMW is not comparable for the same amount of features in a Stinger.

i wouldnt get a BMW (maybe something odd like an 8-series) for the same reason i wouldn't get a Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger/Charger ... you see one at every intersection.

just my 2 cents - i like interesting cars you dont see all that often.

Stinger is beter looking and more practical. But that b58 engine....is a f..ing monster!!

Hi, welcome!!

Having worked for a BMW dealership and a Kia dealership, I think the Stinger is a great bang for your buck. The Stinger was designed by BMW M-division's Albert Biermann so you get the german performance, engineering, tech and design features with incredible reliability and a much longer warranty. I was a genius for BMW for about 2 years and the amount of software/electrical issues I have seen on BMWs far exceeds the amount of things I saw through my experience in selling/owning Kias, not to mention maintenance is much more costly and occurs more often. M340's are great cars and you can feel the quality and sturdiness when driving BMWs, but I find the Stinger to be just as capable of a sports GT and much more unique. I have had my Stinger for almost 3 years and servicing it (with many bolt on's) has just been regular maintenance (other than a JB4 caused electrical issue).

I'm a die hard fan of BMW but if it were between owning an M340 and a Stinger, I would choose the Stinger any day.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
The M340i is definitely a class up over the Stinger, if the cost doesnt matter to you 100% go M340i. The M340i is pretty much a budget M3 and is an absolute beast if you spend a few bucks tuning it. In fact its a monster right off the showroom floor and will run low 12's stock. For comparison, you will need some bolt ons and a Map2 tune on the Stinger to see similar times to a stock M340i.

If you have money, get the M340i.

I want a German car, I really do. But maintenance costs and parts are stupid expensive. Pass.

Yeah true. I had a BMW 335i and it was so expensive. Got rid of it.

Depends what you're ultimately after.

Styling/Space definitely the Stinger.
Both performance oriented cars but m340i with the b58 is a monster and mildly tuned go 0-60 in 3.1-3.2 seconds. Stinger fbo tuned would be low 3s as well. But ultimately beats out the stinger in power.

Warranty the Stinger.
Maintenance the Stinger

Beamers are everywhere.

My main reasons for a Stinger over a M340 (or even M440 Gran Coupe) were:

1) Size. I've never had a compact car for a reason (have always had midsize/large sedans). The Stinger and 3 Series aren't too different in size, but enough to make a difference. I'm 6 foot 2, and I drive friends/family pretty often. The back seat of the Stinger is tight, but the 3 Series is just too small (same reason I didn't consider the G70). I take road trips and generally need a decent sized trunk. Although I didn't buy the Stinger for the hatch, it has been very useful.

2) Price. People talk about buying Stingers at some crazy discount, but that was before Covid. I bought during Covid times, so there were no deals on Stingers or anything else for that matter. Any BMW 340/440 near me was $10,000-$15,000 more expensive than my GT2 (because feature for feature, to get the same level of equipment that's just how the BMWs had to be speced). Even if I could find a base 340, I didn't want to forge features I like/wanted just to get into a BMW. And I didn't really want to buy used (used prices were so close to new prices).

3) Somewhat unique. As other pointed out, one of the draws (for me) was that the Stinger is relatively rare (I know it's not like, collectable rare or super rare, but relatively). Relatively in that, Kia has only sold about 60,000 Stingers in the United States since 2018. Meanwhile, Dodge sells about 70,000-90,000 Chargers and 50,000-60,000 Challengers every year, BMW sells about 40,000-50,000 3 series and 20,000 4 series every year (not to mention every other BMW sold with BMWs ubiquitous styling).

4) Intended function. I was talking with a guy about the difference between a "sports car" and a "sporty car." The Stinger was intended to be a grand touring car, not a canyon carving track monster, which is exactly what I use it for. It's my daily driver. I've put on almost 19,000 miles in the 13ish months that I've had it. I take road trips with it. I drive it in snow storms. I've had fun on back roads, but I don't want my daily driver set up uncomfortably for the few times I drive spiritedly. I'm sure the BMW handles better, I know it's faster, but I don't really need that enough to compromise.

As for the common complaints/criticisms of the Stinger:

Dealership. I haven't had any issues with any of the Kia Dealerships I went to. The forms and Reddit are filled with people bitching about Kia horror stories, but I just can't relate to any of them. I went to several different ones to test drive Stingers, all without issue. My buying process was fine (any car buying process is a little irritating). I did get $2,000 off the MSRP, even during Covid times (I was fine waiting for the right car and the right deal). My service appointments have been totally fine. I say fine because yes, it is a Kia dealership and not a BMW/Mercedes/Audi dealership. That's where my expectations are at. And the Kia dealers I went to were NO different/worse from any Chevy/Honda/Ford dealership I've been to (manufactures that also make and sell vehicles in the same price range as the Stinger) BUT, some people want to feel like they're getting the red carpet experience. Personally, I don't need that.

Quality Issues/"things going wrong". I'm not going to deny that the Stinger has known issues (brake shudder, sunroof squeak, rear hatch rattle being the most common). But I haven't had any problems with my car in the year + and 19,000 miles (knock on wood). The brakes are smooth (I followed a brake bedding procedure, maybe that helped?). My AWD all season tires still have plenty of tread left (some people mention the car eating through tires). My sunroof did start squeaking slightly this summer, but that went away with the heat (I'm going to try some silicone grease on the seals next spring if it comes back) otherwise no interior problems. My rear hatch has never made a noise. So, take that as my anecdotal evidence.

MPG. Nobody is buying a 340 or Stinger for it's efficiency, but man, BMW works some black magic on their engines. They make more power AND get better efficiency than the Stinger. People regularly can get high 30s MPG on the highway in their 340/440, and I think long term tests from MotorTrend and CarandDriver averaged high 20s. Whereas i'm averaging about 21-22 MPG (in mix of city and highway).

^ just my thoughts.

Regardless of the differences between the two, I’d get the Stinger while they’re still around. The 340s aren’t going anywhere. You can get one of those later.

Jokingly...Since I don't park in front of fire hydrants, across handicapped spots, and I use my turn signals, I could never qualify to become a BMW owner, so Stinger it was... ;)

Seriously though $50k was right around my limit based on scrimping and saving, and I wanted something new. The Stinger ticked a hell of a lot of boxes over a lot of everything else out there. It might not have been the best in any category (aside from warrantee), but it was so high up in just about every category I liked and didn't blow my budget.

I'm still under 2k miles, so I know there's plenty of time for things to go pear-shaped. But, I don't have any regrets whatsoever. It is a fun car!

Really appreciate the thorough response!

I just checked the prices on both models (2020 used). Gt2 awd vs m340i awd. Hate to say it, but bimmer looks like a beter value. They pretty much cost the same, in $40-45k range.

Yes thats why its so hard for me to decide now. Looking at the used market a 2020 m340i and stinger are almost identical in prices.

Go with what you can afford.

As a previous BMW owner, I get the appeal of the BMW. I ended up swapping to the Stinger because I was tired of always being afraid of a repair bill. The Stingers interior felt better than my BMW and with the warranty I felt like overall the Stinger would be an affordable option that I would not have to worry much about if something went wrong. If you can put money aside for the BMW repairs and maintenance it is a great car but if you are looking to save some cash or if you are more on a budget, choose the Stinger.
