My car also has this problem, on the driver side headlight. Also a paint chip right between the cracks of the bumper and hood. I brought it into service per my dealer's suggestion. They took some pics to send to KIA and now I'm waiting to hear back. Hopefully good news...cus I'm still waiting on rebadging the front!!

I have peeling around driver side headlight. I showed the dealer and no questions asked they said they would repaint it. Dealer is reaching out to Kia to see if they will pay to have the clear bra and ceramic coating put on after it is repainted since I had those on my car. Although, I am very unhappy that I bought a $50k car that needs any portion repainted. I’ll make sure to let consumer affairs know.

As with the other polls, we don't have massive amounts of data, but I find it interesting that the majority are Dec 17, the headlight surround issue appears to be 50/50, and the worst colors are blue and yellow.

Application of PPF will not help with headlight assembly causing paint damage. The reason is, the PPF does not go in under headlight assembly: the edge only comes up close to it. So the actual point of contact with the paint remains. It will wear over time, no matter how good the adhesion of the paint is. Now, a repaint might be tougher than the factory paint. In which case the damage from the vibrating headlight assembly might be so minimal as to not even be noticeable to anyone not scoping out the area with a light up close, etc. In other words, the damage won't turn into a chip or flake or peeling paint out and beyond the actual point of contact (like the White I saw last week; the only car of 8 that the headlight assembly issue seemed to cause a peeling paint problem).

Yes. I understand that.

@Never thought Would you mind posting a picture of the damage? Just curious due to the dealer's good response. Not sure how I will proceed with small paint chips on my car.

Thanks!

I bought some film for another project, even if I didn't have this issue I'd cut a couple of strips to fit into that corner to protect the paint..

So I just got a called from my dealer and they said Kia approved for a repaint of the bumper. Do you think they will remove the front Kia badge to repaint underneath it? Really wanna swap to the E badge lol.

Gotta leave the car in the shop for a few days tho... :(

@jchan_stinger Is this because of headlight chipping or something worse? The badge should be removed. But I wouldn't count on it.

But they won't repaint my yellow one making me go the buy back route..weird birds these Kia management guys.

Headlight chipping underneath driver side, another chip near the top of the bumper right before the hood, and chips showing out under the badge (not noticeable but I pointed it out to them)

Wait really? Aren't the chips on the yellow ones worst? They told me it was covered under the warranty...is that the way to go?

They said they won't respray any plastic parts on the yellows, just the metal parts...sooo

Yes, warranty. The Yellow bumpers will be repainted under warranty. Why are people making this a bigger problem than it is? The repaint of the metal on Yellows is a special compensation. It is NEW paint, warrantied brand new date and everything. The bumpers have the original warranty date, because Kia says that the Yellow failure was over metal only. There is no freaking way that any body shop is going to take in the whole car and NOT deliver back an entirely repainted car where any chipping/flaking issues are seen. If you point out the chips and flakes they will fix the lot. Then Kia will cover the bumpers under warranty.

I really don't see Kia asserting that all bumpers are road damage!

Ahh gotcha, good to know.

I think you need to tell Kia that then, they would not take into consideration the painting of the bumpers, thus the buy back route... I'll get out while I can instead of having to fight with them to get the rest of the car painted "under warranty".. if they would do it under warranty, it would make more sense to do it at the same time you are doing the rest of the car, no?

Yes. But does this make sense? Kia says, repaint the car, and decided within thirty days if it meets your satisfaction. How in hell is a car returned to you with pristine metal paint and still chipping/flaking bumpers going to meet your satisfaction? If Kia is trying to get these cars to stay put and not get rejected, then they have to allow the entire car to be repainted. There is some kind of communication fubar going on with more emotional, less rational, owners of Yellows (and the other colors are standing by saying "why is my problem less important/valid than Yellows?"). Kia cannot possibly be saying: "Repaint the metal, ignore the rest and tell us that you love your car and will keep it." They say they'll send a cheque for five thousand grand! Is that supposed to induce YOU to let the rest of the car slide? I don't think so! It's supposed be their, "we're terribly sorry that you/we had to go through all this. Please accept our apologies!" But nobody is going to take back their car if the bumpers don't get painted pristine at the same time as the metal parts. NOBODY. Because the car will look like a bad hellish joke.

So just make sure that "your" body shop, or dealership (if you never see the body shop yourself), knows what-all is going to get painted: and it's the whole danged car. Then sit back and wait. When the car is done and you look it over, it will be gorgeous. You will want to say "yes, I'll keep her", because she will be so knocked down dead gorgeous.

The upshot? Kia pays for the whole thing if you say "yes, I'll keep her". In a very few cases, where there is some question about road damaged bumper paint, maybe, MAYBE Kia will argue with the added on cost. You can argue back. You now have your car and your $5K cheque is in the mail. But I'm guessing, from what's been said over and over on this thread alone, that nearly all the bumper chipping/flaking has already been verified and accepted by photo proof, through the dealer, that this is not road damage. And even though Kia has not included bumpers as part of the compensation deal, they have to honor the 36 month paint warranty on the rest of the car.

That's exactly what they are doing..as I said, I told them my bumper had the most problems and would want that done to and they rejected it and sent me straight to the other 2 options.

You don't have a choice in what gets repainted, Kia tells them what they are going to paint. If you could tell them what to repaint, then everyone would go for a full respray regardless if they had problems on their bumper or not.
