First oil change?

I just did my first oil change myself. It really wasn't very difficult.
  • Jacking the Stinger up was the most difficult part. I used two floor jacks. My ramps would not clear the bumper and there is no single jack-point in the center (not that I could see or have read about).
  • Six 10mm bolts and two clips to remove the panel and oil filter panel.
  • I found the socket for the oil filter does NOT need to be a shallow 27mm...which I ordered from Amazon. A regular (not deep wall) 27mm socket would have worked just fine. Since the filter housing is plastic, I would use a tool that has 6-points (socket or wrench). One could use a short 27mm wrench or a ratcheting wrench if you can find a 27mm ratcheting wrench!
  • I used a WIX filter & Valvoline Advanced Synthetic 5W-30. BTW, O'Reilly's Auto Parts carries WIX and will price match oil from Walmart which is significantly less expensive. Mobile 1 and Valvoline are within $0.50 of each other.
  • The Stinger took ~7 quarts as others have said.

But, this was really no big deal...

Stinger GT2 - 3.3L AWD

I hope this helps someone.

Karl

Thanks for the information and details, Karl! O'Reilly's didn't have the WIX in stock, so I took a ride to the dealer and bought an OEM oil filter element, it was less than $12 out the door, which isn't bad at all! I'm still at less than 500 miles, so I'm thinking I should probably stay with conventional (Dino) oil for this first oil-change so everything "breaks-in" nicely. How many miles are you nice folks doing your first oil change? I see a lot of folks are doing their first one at the recommended 6,000 miles!

My first oil change was at 1000 miles. Just had my second change done yesterday. Schaeffer's 9000 5W-30 full synthetic. Will change every 5000 miles or every 6 months, which ever comes first.

I also did my first oil change at about 1000 miles. I didn’t drive it hard until after the original oil was out, just continued 2-4K RPM. Now has full synthetic and I just had my second change at 5000 miles. I will keep it on a every 5k miles rotation because i find it to be convenient to remember and I maybe drive harder than normal conditions :)

I just now changed mine in my garage with conventional "DINO" oil, 5W-30 of some Castrol stuff that meets the requirements in the owner's manual and a factory KIA OEM filter (from the dealer because the auto-parts-store didn't have it in stock) at 497 miles, because I couldn't keep my foot off the pedal to keep the rpm's down. I kept "slipping up" and forgetting how new it was and would floor it - my 497 mile oil-change resulted in some pretty black colored oil draining out too.

I figure I might as well follow the consensus about letting it break-in with conventional oil until a few thousand miles or more, since I plan on keeping this thing for a VERY long time.

I like 5,000 for a number for oil-change-interval too, makes me think I'm treating the car extra nice, never letting any stagnant, old oil clog her arteries. I plan on the next one at 3,600 and slowly extend the interval after that. Just because of my superstitions about getting any particulates out that occur during the break-in session. I don't buy brand new vehicles often, so when I do, I wash and wax them on the first day, then change the earl on the sixth

The first time I filled up the tank, I put $19 in her on January 19th, because it's a M.Y. 2019 and I'm OCD and weird.

Nothing wrong with OCD. I did the same as far as wash and wax first day. I told dealership to not touch it and I would handle the detailing myself. I use different colored microfiber for cleaning, blue for windows, yellow for buffing, orange for engine compartment and black for interior. Yellow and orange are never reused. Blue and black I wash :)

I wanted to do mine at 1000 miles but ended up doing it at 1,500 miles, planning to do next three at 4,500 miles apart (just to end up at even 20k after 5th oil change) and then do it every 5k miles.

Popin' up this tread.
My dealer tells me my first oil change will be at 3750.
Since this is my 4th car from that dealer I think the oil change period will be same 3750. But since m,y car is not leased, but financed. I can skip dealer and do oil change anywhere else with my own oil/filter and almost follow KIA's recommended 6k. Although I am thinking about 5k period. But definitely not 3750 miles. I do not understand why my dealer decided to use this period!?

You are coastal CA, so a "severe" climate with all that salty contamination from the ocean. According to Kia you should be getting oil changed out every 3K miles. I think every 4K should be fine unless you are driving right on the coast all the time. The more inland you are the more you can go with the recommended "every 6K". (and related to "severe" climate, you should be spraying off your undercarriage regularly/monthly if you are near the coast)

Not near the coast at all. Actually driving mostly inland. 98%
Btw. According to KIA’s list of severe conditions living near cost is not included. :)

Eesh, where did I read "coastal"? I know I did. But obviously not in the owner's manual under the "Maintenance" section. Oh, well.

I live near you (Orange County) and I was gonna get my oil changed today. I'm at 2900 miles, but after reading this and other threads, about the manual saying "6K", i might just end up doing it around 5. In the past with my other cars, i was changing about every 4.5-5k on synthetic. I do, however, think those of us that are getting our 1st oil changes at 500, 1000, 1500 miles is way too early. But i suppose that could be a regional thing, i dunno

It's more a personal perception thing. Some who change out oil after the "break in period" (even though Kia says there isn't any need to break in the engine, then they go on and say you might get better and longer performance out of your vehicle if you do) feel that is the smart thing to do.

I just compromise and do it at 4K miles; we have severe condition for c. four months out of the year. But I can't be bothered making the intervals longer during the bulk of the year.

Btw, changing out synthetic that often is a complete waste of money. I don't use it. But those who do almost all say that it's good for, at the least, double the recommended miles of regular oil.

I plan on using synthetic exclusively. So I'm going to do 1st change at the recommended 6000 mile or 1 year range. Then continue on that interval for the life of the car. Any sooner than that I might as well just use conventional oil.

With Direct injection and turbo, shorter intervals with fully synthetic oil is not a bad idea. It's not a port injected NA engine.

Not saying it is, but if the engineers at Kia recommends 6000/1 year then I don't see any harm in going by that interval.

Do you think they care about carbon deposits? It's not covered under warranty, it decrease performance but mostly doesn't break anything at least under 100k miles. But shorter intervals increases visible routine maintenance cost.

One more thing to add, the maintenance schedule is under ideal conditions and for severe conditions oil change intervals drop to 3000 miles. I assume fo many of us, it's a mix of both.

When I checked the book, 6,000 miles. The Kia app says 12,000 which seems too long for its first time. I normally do it myself, but the first one I’ll let them do it and let them take a look.

plus most dealers throw in first oil change gratis
