Exterior door trim

I have a 2019 GTS. During a road trip I noticed a piece of what appeared to be tape flapping. Stopped and it was black trim tape from the passenger door upper trim. Is this black tape actual trim or was it a protective cover ? The same trim is the black tape on the driver side

Unbelievably, it looks like the black packing tape has been on your car all this time. I discovered two pieces of it a couple of months in, this is seven years ago. Are you the original owner?

It was saving the dark chrome trim from the inevitable tarnishing and looking like

Thank you for answering. I am the original owner. Purchased the GTS in December of 2019. So it is just a protective cover. Guess I should remove all of it so the trim can tarnish tarnish to equally

I really don't understand this issue because it is a simple matter to rub the dark chrome pieces vigorously when drying - and of course washing regularly in the first place.

If you just towel dry the painted surfaces and dry the glass you get what my neighbor has - heavily spotted and tarnished dark chrome window trim and grilles. Looks horrible!
