Hey, I've had the car 6 days now and I have noticed a very strange behavior. When I exit the car and close the door, I just push the door lock butting on the door handle, just habit. I've noticed that the car beeps like the door is open but the door is fully closed, so I tried the key fob and the same result. Open and close the door again and it's fine, happens now maybe 1 in 5 times. Anyone else seen this?
Cheers.

Do you always engage park prior to exiting?

Yes of course and the park brake. it's definitely not that.
If you try and stop the engine in Drive or Reverse it will whinge at you to start the engine and put the car in park , if you stop the engine in neutral then it just puts the car in park but leaves all the accessories on.

As far as I have experienced after 12 months of ownership, if you try to lock the doors by pressing the button on the door handle, and the car beeps, maybe it's telling you something is still on that shouldn't be, or maybe the key fob is still in the car, preventing you from locking it, just a thought.

You don’t need to be in neutral to turn the car off. If you’re stationary with your foot on the brake hitting the Stop button will turn the car off and automatically put it in Park for you. You then just need to engage the EPB.

I've never left the key fob in the car accidentally because it never comes out of my pocket :)
I always put a car in park, and I always put the park brake on, living on hills will make you do that as the parking pawl in an automatic transmission is not very strong and should never be used to hold the weight of any car, it's a good way to damage the transmission, that's what a parking brake is for.

When @ShannonC asked, I actually went outside and tried exactly what I said, if you stop the engine while in Drive or Reverse, (must have foot on brake otherwise the car would be rolling) the car does not go into Park but it does start ringing alarms and says on the dash "Press Engine Stop/Start and engage Park".

If the car is in Neutral and you stop the engine, then it engages Park, but leaves lights and accessories on even after opening the door.

If I put the car in Park and stop the engine the accessories stay on until I open the door and everything goes off except for courtesy lighting. I close the door, but 1 in 5 times the door wont lock from the key fob or the outside door button, a bell rings producing the same sound as if the door is ajar, or if the key fob is in the car, (read both of these in the manual and tested them so I knew what the alarms sounded like) but the door is closed and the only fix appears to be to open and close the door again. Then the door locks.

I don't know I have to go to the dealer on Saturday looking for another car for the wife, I'll ask them then.

Thanks anyway fellas.

That does not sound normal at all, that's the way I always lock mine and I've only seen that when another door is open...

If you use auto hold, when you shut the car off it automatically engages the parking break when you turn the car off.

The doors locking and unlocking still befuddle me at times, and this has been going on nearly a year now. If I open the driver door with the black handle button, of course the other doors are not unlocked. If I start the car and get out, say to put something in the hatch, then, if I try to open the passenger door for my wife (who almost always comes out to the car after I do), it won't open, and if I push the black button in the passenger door handle, the car beeps at me. I have to go around to the driver's side and hit the unlock button on the inside of the driver's door. I haven't tried the fob; because I have to go around anyway to drive. Heh. So fumbling for the fob in this situation has always seemed inefficient.

are you pressing the button as your closing (perhaps not giving the car time to acknowledge the door Is closed) just wondering as sometimes we don't catch it happening.

I've noticed this too. I've assumed the car beeps because the key fob is close enough to the car, the car mistakenly believes the key fob is inside the car (and doesn't want me to lock myself out of the car). I take a half step away from the door and reach for the interior lock button and the car locks.

I typically lock my car this way, so that I don't work the mirror motors more than necessary. I could just put the button in the "mirrors out' position, of course, and use the fob to lock it. But I've gotten into the habit of stepping out and reaching down and using the arm rest lock button instead.

Everything you describe here is not normal. Sorry to say but yes, it sounds like you should be showing it to the dealer on Saturday.

A bit OT, but if you press the door handle button twice it will open all doors. Same with the fob unlock button.
I also choose when to retract the mirrors depending on where I'm parking. Don't want some kid walking by bumping the mirrors which seems to be good sport around here at times.

How doors unlock with the handle button is configurable, I set mine to unlock all. Also note, this has nothing to do with the original post's issue...

I’ve had it happen once. It’s usually a sticky door sensor that is also used for the interior light. Give it a few presses to loosen it up and it shouldn’t happen again. Happens on my i30SR the same way.

Well I went to the dealer today and described the situation, and sure as eggs is eggs, it wouldn't happen straight away. So we discussed another problem and went for a small drive and as we returned to the dealership, it happened. Not once but repeatedly, but still intermittently.

The dealer was sympathetic to the situation and has now documented our findings to send to KIA, the Service Manager also and witnessed the door locking behavior and concurred there is in fact an issue with the vehicle. The following list of problems have been identified and while they are annoying they are not serious enough to warrant handing the car to the dealer for an indefinite period of time until resolution. So for now it will be 4 to 5 weeks when the car has to go in for the new car post run-in 3000km checkup, where a further investigation will happen where possible sensor and/or computer and/or key fob replacements are being considered. It was also noted that the left front door was slightly miss aligned where the bottom of the door sticks out when closed approximately 3mm.

The dealer will be taking the observations to KIA and also when they have another Stinger trying the tests we did today to see if this is isolated or a wider problem, so the dealer will look at this in service. So this is a good outcome.

List of issues.
1: Door locking by handle button periodically fails with a "Door ajar" or "Key Inside" Alarm after exiting the vehicle, this is occurring on both driver and passenger side. - Resolution is to open and close the door again or walk away from the car and press the close door button on the key fob.
2: Welcome light system periodically fails to detect key fob presence and does not engage, this is occurring on both driver and passenger side. - Resolution is to open the door by pressing the key fob button or the door lock button on the door handle.
3: Smart tailgate function periodically fails to detect the presence of the key fob and actuate. - Resolution is to walk out of distance and come back or to operate the button to open the tailgate.
4: The other problem identified not to do with door locking. Lane keeping assistance although engaged and with the correct indicator stating the system is on, does not work at all, the system does not either detect lines on the road, or the control of the steering does not function.

I'll update the post when I have taken the car back in a month for the post sale check up.

So it's not those of us who have noticed these strange behaviors going mad, the car does have some bugs or issues. None of this diminishes my ever growing love for this car. Cars are machines and they are not perfect like humans are not, but I have to say the dealer experience, time taken and recognition that there are minor issues and that the dealer is willing to take it up with KIA is fantastic and a world away from my experiences with other car makers who sell you a car and customer support becomes non-existent once the deal is done.

The only time my Stinger doesn't detect the key fob, and not unlock the doors and fold out the side mirrors, is when I have not used the car for quite a few days, so I just press the unlock doors button on the fob and it works fine, then the car detects the fob every other time .
Has anyone noticed or can check if the bottom edge of their fuel filler door actually sticks out too far from the bodywork, there was one facebook member whose Stinger fuel filler door stuck out extreme, mine seems to be slightly out, but that might just be normal, have to check another Stinger at the dealership.

M8ne seems to be a perfect fit.

Glad they’re taking it seriously. Don’t settle for workarounds though; make they sure they fix everything so it’s perfect.
