Definately dont buy it new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, yeah you may be right. I already feel like I'm a outlier, I have a low, sporty, awd vehicle and a rwd pickup that I store in the winter. People at work with their boring cookie cutter cuvs don't know what to think of me.
Same, I have my fun and luxurious GT2 and then I have a 2017 Tacoma for hauling home improvement materials for projects around the house. Both serve their purpose for me. I used to have a sporty manual transmission convertible (sold it last year) but I was barely driving it and it rains too often where I live so not many opportunities to have the top down.

It all depends on how you buy it. I ended up getting my GT for darn near $35k. I'm currently depreciating with market and can jump at any time. Keep in mind, the more expensive cars always depreciate more quickly. Mercedes S class is a prime example. More feature and function seems to drop more quickly.

So, I have to say, OP’s car seems to have depreciated very little once I do the calculation. He says $22k is 40%, which would put MSRP around $37k. If he sold it to Carvana for $25k as I suggested, that would be a residual of about 68% at three years. That is actually quite good for a mid sized luxury-ish sedan! Of course, if he paid MSRP and takes a low trade then the ownership cost is high at $15k over three years, so I would see his frustration.
carvanna offered 26,1, you were right about them i just cant find the vehicle i want on the site yet. thanks for the heads up. your calculation was good too i paid just over 38

Buddy i've been in the car business 14 years. If you buy an SRT8 or Supra wrong you'll be in the same shit too. Yes, some cars hold value exceptionally well. Keep in mind that EVERYTHING depreciates in some way. Something that holds its value well is something you'll inevitably pay too much for pre-owned.

Regardless of what you purchase, buying it right is key.

That’s great, hope you find a good replacement!

Just sell it to them and buy from someone else. I sold a BMW to them a few months ago and they make the process pretty easy. I had the driver meet me at a nearby parking lot. It took about 5 minutes to do paperwork and I was done!

Sounds like the dealer could have been playing the "low ball" game with you as well. Did the same to me when i test drove the new Supra. Once I saw what they wanted to give me for my Stinger, I laughed and left the lot.......so happened that the Supra I test drove was a 3.0 that had been on the lot for over 200 days!

Marked it way down from MSRP(which very few dealers are doing) but thought they would make their money back on the Supra by not giving me $hit for my Stinger. Born at night, just not last night.

sorry to insult your car business experience. i started my first job on a car lot in 1998 since were year dropping. i agree everything depreciates, but this was a waste of money and i hope i can save someone from throwing theres in the rubbish.. BUY USED. DONT BUY THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE NEW UNLESS YOU PLAN ON KEEPING IT FOREVER

You should really add nuance to this... maybe, don’t pay MSRP for a Stinger is a better statement, since yours would have been an incredibly cheap cost of ownership over three if you had gotten 20% off of MSRP, as many others have done.

i diddnt pay msrp? i never said i did

I didn’t say you did, just that your car only depreciated about 32% from MSRP, so if somebody gets the same depreciation but is able to negotiate 20% off then the cost of ownership is really good over a few years (and probably lower than buying used).

My 2 Cents.....Regardless if you buy new or used, the one with the "upper hand", usually comes out with the better deal. If the dealer has the upper hand (multiple buyers for the same product or you still owe on your current vehicle), then they don't have to negotiate much. On the other hand, if the buyer does (trade in paid for, cash buy) then the dealer has to negotiate more towards the buyer. If they don't, buyer will go somewhere else and dealer has to hope next person is not at an advantage.

Also, if buyer allows "emotion" to decide instead of "intellect", then the dealer has the upper hand once again. In my case, dealers have a bit of an upper hand because i still owe on my car and that allows the dealer to dictate the sale more....when i bought my current Stinger, my trade in was paid for so I walked away from the first deal and they called me everyday for 3 days straight until I agreed to the deal. Although satisfied with the purchase, I should have put "emotion" back in check and waited them out for the Orange GTS they had on the lot......emotion won't get the upper hand again which is why I am "patient" to wait for either a 22 GT or Supra.....Still want to test drive the 2.5 though....;)

So I shouldn't have bought my Stinger brand new when it came out to 3k less than a used one? Doesn't make sense not to...

This line of thinking is tiresome... if no-one buys a car new, well, then good luck getting one used. And there are intangibles that come with new car ownership. And - statistically - the stinger is at least average if not better with respect to depreciation.

Why not purchase the Supra at the marked down price and leave your trade out of the equation? You can always sell your Stinger on Vroom, Carvana or Car Max. I was in a similar boat you are a few years ago. Was in the market for a truck and had my sights set on a '16 Ram Longhorn 4x4. Dealer just got a used one in and their 3rd party associate priced it well under market value. They tried to weasel their way out of the advertised price but couldn't. They worked me on my trade though. In hindsight, I should've just sold my trade elsewhere and still gotten the fantastic deal on the truck due to their error.

I never talk about a possible trade in until I’ve done the deal (all the way on the car I’m buying). If you can do it in a private sale that’s usually best. But to your point there are options to get rid of the old car and not attach it to the sale of the new car. You generally have more leverage. Also, I have no problem searching around other dealerships to get the best deal. I will use that information in my negotiation. There are always hungry dealers out there.

Dunno what you did. Quick glance shows 2019 GT1s going used for just about what I paid for new and I'm plenty positive on it. Do you have a 2.0T? maybe they aren't holding value as well.

Also...anyone not expecting to take a hit buying a car, shouldn't be buying new to begin with, and especially something in the sporty/luxury segment. And the Jeep SRT8? SUV, Jeep. Yes it's going to hold value. And the Supra's value will be bouyed by the fanboy tax until the end of time.

Hmmmmmmmmm?? To be honest, it didn't cross my mind???? I knew I would get some good info from this thread.....

Yep, 2.0
