Hey gents,

I've seen this come up a few times in sale threads, that its too much of a hassle or expensive to ship rims. Truth is, they are actually really easy to ship and that's why I created this thread (and mods were nice enough to sticky this). I detailed my experience below, and if users post up about theirs, I will add it to this OP. Basically, we are all want to avoid UPS/Fedex as their rates for heavy items (especially cross country) are ridiculous.

ShipNex
I use ShipNex and they are cheap and super convenient. For the reluctant seller, the buyer can arrange everything themselves (obviously seller address is needed) so all the seller needs to do is pack them up and put the shipping label on them. ShipNex contracts with Fedex, and they will come to your door.
  • May 2018: I sold my rims/tires (all 4, each in own package) to a guy in NYC. From VA, total shipping cost was $124.
  • Dec 2021: A few weeks ago I bought 4 rims (each in its own package) from a member here, he lives in Ohio and I live in VA. The total shipping fee was $136 and it was delivered to me within the week.
Just something to consider when people say 'shipping rims is hard'. If you can package each one up, its easy.

Greyhound
BadTrainDriver said "you can ship large items(but under 100 lbs.) via Greyhound for a fraction of the price from UPS/FedEx. I purchased four wheels last year from a member in Denver CO., he shipped them to the semi local Greyhound station in Columbus OH for $60. Yes, I had to drive thirty minutes each way to the station and back, but that wasn't a problem." They use the storage underneath passenger buses

RogueIV said he used it to ship a 'full body kit'

If you are non-US, by all means, post your ideas too. Keep the good experiences coming!

Super helpful. Thanks!

As another FYI, you can ship large items(but under 100 lbs.) via Greyhound for a fraction of the price from UPS/FedEx. Denver, CO to Colombia, OH for $60 is pretty damn good. Are they using extra storage underneath their buses?

OP updated with Greyhound, and that this is now a more general thread about how to ship heavy stuff cheaply.

Greyhound is a good choice. I have used them in the past to ship a full body kit.

Thanks for the tip! Did you happen to sell or purchase a set of 19" OEM wheels and tires? Trying to set up a pick-up/delivery for myself but i have no idea how much the OEM wheels and tires weigh.

1) For ShipNex - what method are you choosing? "Box" I assume? Then the weight of each box? Or do you do it as a "Package" and make the weight for the whole thing. It's a little unclear. I guess I may reach out to ShipNex to determine this answer
2) For Greyhound - I tried estimating this online with 4 28x28x12 boxes and it was like $300+

Can someone outline HOW they actually got these numbers?

For Shipnex:
  1. Login and/or create an account
  2. Create Shipping Label
  3. Fill in the (1) Sender and (2) Receiver sections.
  4. In (3) Package and Shipment Details, Package Type = Box, and Packages = 4. This is assuming you are shipping 4 individually boxed rims.
  5. Now you should see 4 line items for package details. Put in the weight, L, W, H of each box you are sending
  6. Fill out rest of the sections. When you are done, it will give you the quote

How does one package tires (or wheels with tires mounted)?

cardboard placed on both sides of wheel to protect from scuffing/damage during shipping. I typically cut out my own circular cardboard cut outs to wheel size.
