Catastrophic Tire Failure 70mph

Quick Update: Dealer so far still wants $374 and August 8-9th for a tire. Michelin called me back with an elevated case. I went to Discount Tire, they looked at the left tire, called Michelin on the elevated case line. Michelin will do a prorate and was able to get the same tire for $60 out of pocket new and by the 6th. I can also add full coverage any circumstance coverage to all 4 tires for $235 including the new tire at the prorated rate. I am going to do that.
That's the kind of response I wanted to hear. Good for you. And your decision is spot on. I'll keep this in mind, tucked away for future need. I'll be going through Costco for my Michelin winter tires in a few months.

What is the brand? Was that caused by driving in freezing conditions?

All brands, and yes - but in some cases, not even freezing. No shortage of discussions on forums for performance vehicles, like corvettes, lexus, camero, etc.

Rubber is not water, it doesn't harden at a specific temperature. Different compounds of rubber are designed for different purposes and some of them - specifically those used for summer tires - are not designed to be used at low temperature and can be damaged, as evidenced here.

You'll lose grip before that, but (again) my point is that most drivers are not even aware of the risks. I'm not arguing with you.

I didn't feel that you were. You are being informative. Thanks. I certainly don't know squat beyond my personal experience, and what I've read in the warranty stuff, about the differences between summer and winter tires, vis-a-vis the hazards of low temperature driving conditions.

If I had any surviving reservations about bothering with winter tires, this thread would have killed them off!:eek:
 
Sorry to see your issue, from your photo’s it looks like the sidewall has failed, glad to hear Michelin are helping on the price they obviously know something, (sort of accepting tyre failure/fault) if this is the case I would also request my rim to be replaced as the tyre failure has caused damaged to the rim from what I can see in your pictures.

Feedback on my tires since purchase. I bought my stinger in mid Feb in Ohio, drove it in Chicago winter for about 2 months, snow and ice, shitty roads, before weather started to warm up, I've put 18,600 miles on my stinger since Feb (fiance and I from Chicago to Knoxville) but I had to continue work for a couple months in Chicago so I was back and forth every other weekend. At my 15,000 service check up rear tires were closing in on needing to be replaced, front tires were still good for a while. No significant damage or cracking. These are the 19in summer tires. Will probably replace all tires at 20k. But I have to say they have been very good tires for the conditions I've put them through.

Wow! So harsh to severe weather conditions on a tire that Michelin says "don't drive these in freezing or near freezing conditions"? 15K miles worth? Amazing. I bet you won't be doing that again! And Michelin is saying they'll back the tire anyway?

Yeah I was like wuuuuh?

It wasn't my first choice to drive the car in those conditions but I got offered an incentive to remain in Chicago and finish out some work before moving to Knoxville. I'd say I put no more then 2k miles on it in actual cold/icy temperatures. Most of my traveling happened after it warmed up.

There is huge difference between what the tires are capable of versus the legal language. High quality Sumner tires from 2018 are better overall than all season tires from decades ago. Winter tires are safest if you live in a true winter climate and have to drive every day. For the majority who only have a few bad days a year to drive through, learning how to drive properly is probably a much smarter investment than tires.

Agreed most of summers these days are excellent in rain. Probably not best in snow but I run summers year round in Nor Cal in mountains with torrential down pours in winter and never feel like I need all seasons. Frankly a good summer tire often will grip better in wet road conditions. Typically isn’t until water is standing and pooling that a true all season comes into play.
