Carbon Cleaning

The car we purchased had a Misimoto catch can installed from the previous owner and it had 15,000 on it at that point. We ran

Techron thru a full tank and saw some goopy carbon in the catch can. We had the oil changed the other day and I emptied the

catch can and it had a minimal amount of oil that had a strong smell of fuel in it which is to be expected. I have checked the catch can

several times during ownership and this seems to be the norm. At 19,000 miles I highly doubt we need to address carbon build up.

So, I think that one should pay attention to this obviously as it is a GDI and could cause issues going forward.

I do not have a catch-can, but I don't think there should be a strong smell of fuel from the crankcase.

Is your oil fuel-diluted which would indicate a problem?

No, it's only in the catch can. The crankcase is fine and the oil is gold on the dipstick and doesn't have that smell and have no CEL's.

Car runs great and have no issues. It's just how GDI's are and that is why people use catch cans. At 19,000, I am not concerned.
