Hi all! I'm new and I don't yet own a Stinger, but I do hope to in the future. The threads about bad pads and rotors on the '18-'21 has me troubled with buying one of these model years (used or new). I'm curious if there is an information available that would indicate that Kia has addressed the issue on '22?

Welcome to the forum.

Nothing I've heard says that the North American market has changed pad compound. I have 41K miles and 8mm of pad thickness, still; never a trace of noise or shudder. It's my belief that the great majority of Stingers do not have a shuddering brake, or pad deposit on the rotors problem. That said, it is apparently a crap shoot whether you get shudder/deposits or not: I don't know why. Owners swear that their driving style can't be to blame. But braking is a subjective business, so, who knows? Earlier today I had a multi-point inspection done during an oil change and the brakes are fine. I think it's mostly my driving style. In the event that you do have shuddering brakes you can rebed the pads and get warranty maintenance done. One of our group has reminded us just today that over 19K miles he's had his rotors replaced under warranty FOUR times (and he's flat out of patience). It does seem that the most consistent fix is to get aftermarket pads before your rotors are trashed (cementite, i.e. different hardness levels across the face of the rotor): bed them properly and go. A harder pad will stop the deposits from forming on the rotor and causing shudder. I haven't heard of anyone within the 12K miles brake warranty losing the warranty by going with aftermarket pads. You would have to eat the expense (not large) by supplying your own aftermarket pads: Kia has never, to my knowledge, addressed the shuddering issue by replacing pads, only turning/replacing rotors.

Merlin thanks for the welcome. I'm also live in WJ and I've made the decision to purchase on of the last '21 GT1s that Jerry Seiner has. I'm picking it up tonight! Did you bed your brakes when you purchased your car?

No problems on mine either (2019). I believe bedding the brakes, and/or switching the pads solved alot of the issues for other owners on the forum.

Welcome!

I had the brake chatter issue one time and after doing the rebedding trick it never came back. I'm still planning on going to better aftermarket pads when the time comes, but I'm at 33k miles and still about 50% life left in them (lots of highway miles!)

Cool! Let me know what color combo you have and I'll keep my eyes peeled. I am a rabid hunter for "Stingers in the wild" (the thread on this exact topic: Has anyone seen any Stingers in the wild?): I've seen 77 in almost three years of ownership; it took me over five months to see my first "wild" Stinger; so far this month I've seen five. :D

I did not bed my brakes. During the first 600 miles break in period, I actually did the opposite and babied my brakes: the manual advised to go easy on the brakes while you're breaking in the engine between 2K and 4K RPM.

I wonder if yours is hiding in the midst of all these 2022 Stingers? (I took these pics yesterday after my TSB repair and oil change):

I don’t see my car in the photos. My car is white with the black interior. I’ll keep my eye out for you as there are not many Stingers out there and certainly only one with your plate!

And only one other Silky Silver that I have seen (well, not counting a 2.0L SS that might still be around; but I'm pretty sure it was being sold when I saw it, as it passed me, then "U" turned and came back the other way; a test drive, I figured, so, that one is probably gone to parts away).

I bet this one is yours: the reflection of the LR wheel in the Ascot Green looks like a typical (now old style) GT wheel. :D

I had the dealership replace my pads/rotors with the Euro-spec parts and the problem (for now) is thankfully gone.

I think it's a bit of a mix between luck of the draw and driving style. You should be fine though. Good luck!!

Yes that is my car! That space was empty when we picked it up.

Merlin - I'm too new to send you a personal message, but would like to connect to see your car. Please email me at jaredgsd@gmail.com.

I've had the problem twice now on my 2018 GT2. Kia replaced them as 12K and it came back at under 20K. Now they say it isn't under warranty and won't replace them. Not happy about that. I am now exploring aftermarket solutions :(

I'd just replace the pads and be done with it. IMHO, it's not worth my time bothering to go through a dealership who's just going to replace them with OEM pads again. Pads are cheap, install is easy.

Or just re-burnish your brakes, that's free and takes all of 4 mins.

My brother invited me to the track, so I just decided to say "screw it" and change the rotors and the pads. I'm almost at 2K miles.

FWIW, the rotors are fine. Swap the pads if it’s a concern. I wouldn’t be distracted from purchasing when $200 solves a problem that may be nonexistent anyway.

I swapped my front pads only and there is no pulsating anymore, however they do screech sometimes under light braking. EBC red would be a great daily pad IMO, I have Hawk HPS 5.0 and looking back not getting a track pad for daily would have been the better call.

How did your car handle the track?

I have yet to track my Stinger. I feel it's too large and heavy from what I am used to but will give it a shot nonetheless.

i have pretty good vibration in the brakes right now so have it in to get looked at. Would just changing the pads fix the issue? If I understand it correctly the vibration is caused by the pad deposits on the rotors. Would new pads clean off those deposits or would the rotors need to be turned?

Replacing the pads fixes the issue for 99.99% of people having this issue. Just be sure to follow propper breakin in proceedure with the new pads to properly burnish them.
