I am pretty sure dealers like that do not have much in the way of long term thinking. With the number of cars that I have bought over the years I always return to the dealerships that do not treat me like crap.
Had a great experience when my ex-wife bought her GMC Acadia back in the day. The Salesperson was such a great person that I walked in 3 years later, he remembered every little detail about the family right on queue and quickly helped me strike a deal on a Regal GS. I have not purchased another car from them, but again several years later I walk in to test drive a new Terrain (HORRIBLE btw...) and he remembers me like it was yesterday.
My Kia Stinger purchase experience was also great. I have a post here about it. I walked on to the lot, did a totally random test drive of a Pathera GT AWD just to evaluate the twin turbos. I was honest about my intentions at the time. I hadn't driven the GT. It was at the top of my list for vehicles I am looking in to if I can fit my 6'2 butt in the car along with my 2 kids. Salesperson introduced himself tossed me the keys and let me have at it. He didn't even try to join me on the drive. I then briefly talked about the model I wanted (the vehicle I now have). He took notes. I walked off the lot without hassle, followed by a phone call and email negotiation while this baby was en-route to the dealership.
Those are the salespeople I will work with, even if I do not get the best of the best deal wise. It doesn't take much effort. Whether I keep the Stinger or head back to Mopar in a couple years, he will be the salesperson I will go back to if he is still around.
Meanwhile another salesperson with the dealer group I purchased the Stinger from was a gentleman who I did a Wrangler test drive with (for the gift card money), was an absolute sleazeball. He was so excited that I stopped by and was tied to him....tried texting me a few times about the Stinger, rught up until I told my new salesperson to drop him completely from my file. Poor bastard will never get my business. It isn't worth my time or money to deal with that.
tldr; Keep searching and you will find someone who is willing to work with you. Even within the same dealership or dealer group. Some salespeople just go rogue and don't understand how to do a deal, or have the ability to think long term knowing someone might return to make a purchase some day.
