Hi all! First post here, just bought my Stinger GT AWD after waiting four years to purchase and I could not be more excited.

I would like to add black rims and I’m looking for advice on the best route forward. Based on my research, I see three options.

  • Plastidip the OEM rims – seeing lots of mixed reviews on this one…….[Pros] super cheap and not permament…..[Cons] doesn’t look as nice, chips easily
  • Powdercoat the OEM rims – what would cost be here? I’m seeing around $500 for four rims? Does that seem accurate? This looks a lot nicer than plastidip? Do the OEM rims look good in black? For this cost should I just be buying new rims?
  • Purchase new black rims – how much would I have to spend for a new set of quality rims? Where would you recommend purchasing? Would I be able to sell the OEM rims and for how much? Does swapping the rims out void any of the warranties?
  • Is there another option I’m missing?
Thanks in advance for any support!

I go back and forth on this and am leaning towards powder coating. I don’t like the look of plastidip over time and I don’t have space for more wheels and tires. The price is reasonable for powder as far as I’m concerned, it’s really just finding the downtime.

I did both. Got tired of sanding/repairing the OEM finish GT wheels, so, went powder coat and A/S tires for my winter setup. The rest of the year I use the Michelin summer tires on TSW "Watkins". Each wheel was $125 to powder coat (plus I paid $25 per hubcap to paint gloss black to match). Blacked out wheels are dramatic looking and much easier to make repairs on with touchup kits.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
I'm in the same boat as Merlin. If you live in an area where you will need winter tires you could purchase a second set of wheels/winter tires that have a gloss black finish. That way you get the fun of switching up the look from the OEM silver wheels in the summer to gloss black in the winter. It's one of the few things I enjoy about the car when it comes time to prepare for winter.

Here is my 18" winter setup:
