Are some Stingers more quiet inside than others?

I've been reading a few stories about how the 2.0T is louder inside than the 3.3TT. Outside of the possibility that one Stinger just so happened to be made poorly, what could be the cause of this?

- Do ALL the Stinger models get sound-absorbing glass? (answered: yes)
- Is there a noise-cancellation feature present through the stereo speakers in any or all Stinger models? (answered: Harmon Kardon audio system only)

What other possibilities are there for more interior noise in one Stinger over another?

Even the base Stinger has the sound absorbing glass. Not sure if the 18 inch vs 19 inch wheels makes a difference. The V6 engine is making more noise too so that could just be covering some noise up?

Just stopped by the dealership on my lunch break, and Rich the head tech said models with the HK sound system do indeed come with active noise cancellation.

I didn't go on too long of a GT test drive, so I'm unsure but Tirerack com rated the factory GT rubber as quieter than the base Bridgestones. It's been my experience that tires can make or break someone's impression of a given car's performance and civility.

So based on above, my GT2 has active noise cancelling? It sure doesn't feel that way. Is it always active or do I need to turn stereo on or something?

How do you figure your active noise cancellation isn't working? That's a good question about whether or not the audio system needs to be turned on. I'm going to assume the answer to that question is NO - but I'd love to hear from somebody who knows for sure. But, realistically, it would be silly if the audio system had to be on for that to be working. It should just be on all the time...

I don't know how Kia handles noise-cancellation, but in general I would think it would have to have the radio or sound system turned on. It usually works by sampling what it recognizes as ambient noise (road noise, wind noise, tire noise, etc.) and generates an inverse sound wave 180° out of phase to cancel the active sound. Maybe the sound system is in active mode even with radio/audio turned off? Good question.

mine is quiet except for screaming kids, i can barely hear the rattle over them...

drove both, and there was a lot more noise coming from the hatch area in the 2.0

The only car on Earth that's more quiet when you turn on the audio system. :p Really, I have no idea how these things work but I hope they have the feature working whether you're listening to music or not. In fact, whatever noise this feature filters out is probably not heard when you're listening to music anyway...

Well, this could just be because one Stinger had the hatch rattle and the other did not...

Or could it be that the noise cancellation is only in the up-scale Harmon-Kardon units which the base models do not have?

Correct. Base models do not come with active noise cancellation. My 05 Accord did, though, and was active even with the radio off. It was their 1st attempt I believe and you could actually hear it trying to compensate at times. I'm sure the tech has advanced since then, but the guy I spoke to at the dealership said only models with HK systems have it. It also means base models are the only trim without piped in engine noise--the engine note in that trim is the real deal.

Perhaps someone could simply take their iPhone with them and use a db app? Turn off the fake engine noise piped into the cabin and measure the dbs? I did this last time and it worked really well...

It was not hatch rattle I was hearing in the 2.0 - it was road noise and a drone from the rear area

Interesting. You think they were both coming from the hatch area? If so, I wonder if there was an issue with the insulation in either that specific model - or all 2.0 Stingers...

Not mine, although perhaps something underneath near the spare tire wasn't secured...?

I'm new to the Forum, and I recently purchased a GT 2. I love the car; the only issue I have is that above 45mph, there is noticeable wind noise coming from the driver window. It sounds as if the window isn't completely closed, although it is. Has anyone else had a similar issue? If so, is there anything that can be done about it?

First time I've heard that complaint and I've been on forums for months along with Facebook. Sounds like an individual problem. Warranty. My GT2 is very quiet considering it's not a rolling sofa.

The dealer should be able to fix that issue.
