It has not been announced but there is a strong rumor of a Stinger 3.5T at some point in the future.
I have no idea when this will happen but the engine lineup of hyundai/kia will be changed from 2.0/3.3 to 2.5/3.5. The 3.5T is expected to have a little bit over 400HP. This rumor does not concern only the Stinger but the entire range of gasoline cars (including the G70 G80 G90 etc.).

EDIT: This seems to be a false rumor, sorry for the confusion. :D

If true, I can't imagine it would be any time soon. The 3.3 is a brand new engine and has been well received so far. It takes a lot of money designing engines, not something you throw away after 2-3 years of production. Maybe they're thinking about increasing the bore/stroke of the 3.3 to get it to 3.5.... I don't know, I don't think that would work with a 10 year warranty to look after.

You are correct, probably not sooner 2020
or even later, for a next iteration of the Stinger.
This engine will be used on the G80 first.

I agree with that. It might be that with the next gen of Stingers (after a 4 to 6 year life cycle), they would bring in a new powertrain.

It wouldn't surprise me. Hyundai/Kia is going to need a better engine if its going to compete at the higher end of the segment (M4, Giulia Quad, C63 AMG territory) as the one in the Stinger and the G70 is a bit under-powered.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

So you think they're going to replace the 5.0 with a 3.5TT? It would make sense for the G90 and maybe for the G80. The engine options on the G80 is already a bit strange as it is.

I have no idea, I am just relaying some rumors. ;)

I asked to a friend that works at Kia and he just told me that the 3.5 is a NA engine and it will NOT replace the 3.3T in the Stinger/G70...
Should I delete this thread? I feel sorry for spreading a wrong rumor. :(
(In Korean car communities many people are currently talking about the 3.5T engine like if it was happening...)

that makes a lot more sense. The 3.8 NA has been around for awhile and should be near the end of its life cycle.

Yes and it goes with the trend of downsizing.

Thats not even close to what they are looking to compete with ...................

Huh? They wont want to move into that sub segment in the future?
Genesis maybe, not Kia. The Stinger is already a giant leap for them, going after the likes of the Audi RS, AMGs, and M series is too much too fast IMO. If the Stinger starts selling a lot better, maybe in the next generation we would see some kind of 450+ hp Stinger high performance variant. I would think we would see this happen with the G70 before the Stinger though, but who knows.

It's funny to think of a pretty large sedan weighing almost 4k lbs that runs a 12.9-13.1 stock as having an "under powered" engine lol, sign of the times I guess.

True. When you can get 350hp in a focus and over 300hp in a Camry, you know times have changed.

Focus RS no longer available in the States anymore, and the seats were abysmal in that thing. Yes is was a riot to drive, but only at ~15 min clips, unless you weighed 100lbs soaking wet and then you might be comfortable.

300hp Camry........ok I'll give you that one. I've personally never driven one, but know a couple people with 2016-17 Camry's and they swear by how comfy and nice they are. But they also scoff at what we would pay for a Stinger so I guess badge snobs exist at the low end also.

It is a great time to be a car nut though with cars having good performance at a reasonable price that used to be only in the $80-100k range 10-15 years ago. And who would've ever thought that the classic Japanese sports cars of the 90s would turn into collector cars.... Anyone seen the price of a good condition MkIV Supra or TT RX-7 lately??? If only I could've convinced my parents that YES we need a 2 door Supra back when I was in high school LOL

I think people get too stuck on HP figures. Sure the Camry has 300 hp, sure it weighs 400 lbs less than the Stinger, performance shouldn't be that far right? The Camry runs a 14.3 1/4 mile.... that's an absolutely huge difference. My 2016 Maxima also had 300 hp, also ran about the same 1/4 mile time. The Stinger is on another level, you can't compare the two.

I had a 91 MR2 Turbo back in high school, I should have never sold that car! That thing was so fun to throw around.

Oh trust me, I was in no way referring that a Camry would come close to a Stinger, lol. It is pretty astonishing that a grocery getter like the Camry would have that big of an HP number though.

MR2 Turbo........dude, I was fortunate enough to have friends with more money than sense and those cars were an absolute BLAST to drive. If I could fill my dream garage it would be 90s Japanese sports cars and my Stinger. My wife would have her '70 Chevelle SS 454 and all would be right with the world.:thumbup:

That 3.5 should get some turbocharging and be used in the G80/90 cars, much like Lexus has done with the LS. H/K could get more power from the 3.3T as we have seen a few places tuning them for higher power ratings. For the Stinger to stay around into a second gen, they need to sell more of them. For some folks, they need to know the cars are doing well past the first couple of years before they jump in and get one. We should see sales get better in 2019 and 202o when they do a mid cycle refresh providing they continue to do well and nothing major starts breaking.

Higher HP numbers are likely the outcome of the drive towards more efficiency without sacrificing needed performance (i.e. overtaking, hills, carrying more load) - moving the vehicle in the most efficient manner most of the time leaves a lot of reserve. They aren't producing peak torque off idle because that's not needed by the typical buyer.

As any GT owner can testify, the Stinger power unit is designed for performance first, and everything about the car is geared towards performance driving in comfort - just not specifically for a track.

The Stinger is targeted at a very specific kind of driver, but of course not every Stinger owner buys them for that purpose.

OK guys the rumor was true!
3.5L twin turbo Lamda3 engine producing more than 400HP will be used in the next generation G80 and in future high performance Kia and Hyundai models (=> Stinger and G70 mid cycle refresh).
