2022 3.3 GT2 AWD CEL Today - No Mods...

My 2022 3.3, bone-stock, threw a check-engine light today, with a message about the ECS. I also lost all boost. I turned-off the car, restarted, boost returned, but CEL is still on. It happened after moderate acceleration, maybe half-throttle.

Is there a way to find any codes thrown?

Any ideas what may have happened?

Any recommendations going forward?

Two times in the past I've lost boost, so this is starting to worry me.

Any help/insight is appreciated!

I'm not clear on the message, I should have taken a picture, but I figured I should be able to retrieve it when I got home but could not find it.

I believe the jist of the message was there was a failure within the ECS itself.

Was there any ECS related symptoms?
No, the car ran fine the rest of the way home, about 60 miles, and the CEL remained on.

When I got home, I stopped/restarted the engine, and the light remained on.

I'm good with that if it solves the problem. Do you have any real evidence of an upcoming recall?

Have any of these '22 issues been confirmed as boost related issues though?

Or are they power issues - which cause low power, and low boost?

I haven't read anything yet that concluded any of these so called boost issues were related to the turbos.


I've seen people calling normal traction control operation - boost issues!

Any standard off the shelf OBDII code reader can read the codes.

Or your local Kia dealer?

Was it flashing?

Without reading the codes, the CEL is kind of meaningless

Yes, it stayed on.
No, it wasn't flashing.
BTW, I did retighten my gas cap, but no change.

Agreed - I WISH I had taken a picture of the error message...! It even gave me the option of scheduling an appointment, or, contacting roadside help.

And thanks for chiming in, I appreciate the help.

Okay, here we go, got the code:

P0234

It's an "Engine Overboost Condition":

What causes the P0234 code?
  • The turbocharger/supercharger wastegate is damaged or sticking
  • The wastegate control valve solenoid is sticking
  • The wastegate control hose is getting blocked and the boost pressure cannot be relieved quickly enough
Since this is the 3rd time for me losing boost, it is not a fluke happening, and something is mechanically wrong with my car.

Per the article, has anyone tested their wastegate control solenoid to see if it's sticking?

I have a 22 GT2 with 5K miles and have had the same issue twice that threw the P00234 code and about four times were boost was gone without the CEL. The CEL on both occasions went away after the car sat overnight. Took it to my local Kia dealership and they acknowledged the code but said there is nothing they can do. They did say Kia is aware of the issue. There is another post were the OP said there is an issue where the wastegate plumbing gets debris in it and causes the issue. I have not lost boost in the past 800 miles. So hopefully there will be TSB from Kia sometime soon.
 
Seems to be happening with 2022 3.3TT models. There was a minor change in engine programming, reflected in slightly more horsepower (368 up from 365). Wonder if whatever changes were made to deliver more power, possibly taking advantage of the new exhaust system(?), are the cause.

I would speculate and say no, because the 2021's have reported the same exact problem.

So it has been going on for a while now, and Kia should have had a fix for it by now.

During that time, has the weather been hot, warm, cool, or cold?

I ask because the first time I lost boost it was 17 degrees F out, and has been cold since.

It has been hot this summer. Winter is coming in two months, we shall see!
 
I will say that the boost issues I have experienced have been in <20°F temps. However, I never get in to the go pedal until oil temp gauge is 150+. Always take a two+ mile cruise at 30mph...then get her on the highway and ease into aggressive acceleration. Once she is at 150°+ oil temp its go time with 200° operating temp being no holds barred go pedal. This all being said - have had no issues since temps here have been over 20°F. Perhaps ambient air temp along with oil temp is the fail safe indicator for the ECU?

Last observation - I came from the Ford world...a 2015 and then a 2018 Ford Taurus SHO. The Stinger is by far a better car in stock form in every way. Absolutely have fallen in love with it.
