2018 North American Car of the Year

The Stinger is getting a LOT of recognition. I know it's not the perfect car for everybody but Kia did a great job with this vehicle. I don't see the Ford Fusion or the Buick Regal on any of these lists...

"Vehicles must be new or substantially changed." The Stinger, Accord, and Camry are all new models for 2018, the Fusion isn't so its not eligible. I guess the Buick Regal just didin't make the cut.
I'm excited to see it nominated. It certainly deserves it.

I guess the "next" Fusion will be on the list. Who won last year? I imagine the Fusion made the list... I'm a little surprised the Regal didn't make it but I do feel the Stinger is in a better position to be car of the year than the Regal.

Accord wins.

2018 North American Car Utility and Truck of the Year Winners Announced

DETROIT – January 15, 2018 – The Honda Accord, Volvo XC60, and Lincoln Navigator were crowned as the winners of the 2018 North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) awards today at the North American International Auto Show.

The awards are among the most prestigious in the industry because they are chosen by a panel of more than 60 jurors from print, online and broadcast media across the United States and Canada. Votes were tallied confidentially by Deloitte LLP and remained sealed until they were announced today by NACTOY officers, President Mark Phelan, Vice President Matt DeLorenzo and Secretary-Treasurer Lauren Fix at Cobo Center in Detroit.

The three winners each stood out in their segments for different reasons.

“Honda seems to have executed some sort of magic trick — not only is this 10th-generation Accord far sleeker and more decisively styled than its predecessor, it’s somehow roomier inside, too,” said Chris Paukert, a NACTOY juror and managing editor of Road Show by CNET. “Even in low-end trims, it drives well and offers a strong amount of standard equipment.”

“Like the XC90, the XC60 offers Volvo’s distinct brand of luxury and it may even be more appealing than its bigger brother. The ride is exemplary, and when smartly equipped, it is a fine value,” said NACTOY juror and freelance auto writer Kirk Bell.

NACTOY Juror Ron Sessions of the New York Daily News said, “the 2018 Navigator received a more dramatic update than its Ford Expedition sibling and its impact for the brand will be stronger as a result. With its design now aligned with the Continental, the Navigator becomes an even more important image – and the profit-maker for Lincoln.”

Chosen from dozens of new vehicles, jurors evaluated the finalists based on segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. The process started in June 2017 by determining vehicle eligibility and includes three rounds of voting.

Now in their 24th year, the awards are unique because they are awarded a group of dozens of respected automotive journals instead of being given by a single publication, website, radio or television station.

LOL! While most of us felt the Stinger should win, I had a feeling the press would not give them it to them.

This really is disappointing but not tragic for the car , if it wins European car of the year it will have more leverage . To be a shortlist finalsit in NA year 1 is damn impressive .............Go Stinger !

Honda’s check didnt bounce...

On one hand, I'm surprised. On the other, not so much. I mean - we all know the M5 is a pretty awesome car and that didn't win either. It probably came down to the price...
Totally agree they overpriced the cars for the US market and that hurt them on value points !

Seriously, first the Alfa and now the Accord? Me thinks it's going to take KIA years before they're seriously considered for a top award.

top award

Award or No Award - people generally buy the car they want or need, not the car that some unknown votes to be the best, which by itself is relative and does not carry much weight.
Let the marketplace decide.

Agreed. However if by let the market place decide comment you think the stinger has any chance of outselling the Accord you're crazy. The Accord sold 322,000+ units in just the US last year. The stinger won't sell 10% of that worldwide. They are different cars for different people. The stinger is not ever going to be that type of mass market vehicle.

I did not say anything about the Stinger outselling ANY car, nor would you know what I am thinking. The Stinger will not outsell any of the popular vehicles. Let's face it, the Stinger is NOT a family car. Any van will outsell the Stinger. Are they the best vehicles? For certain requirements, absolutely. Any SUV will outsell the Stinger. And So On.
But there is a distinct possibility, that this exercise in manufacturing by KIA will find it's niche in the marketplace and be a vehicle that's looked upon with a good amount of respect.

The Stinger has gotta be Korean car of the year...

Do they have an award for that there ??

The Honda Accord starts at almost $10,000 less than the Stinger. It's automatically selling more for that reason. Another reason is it's been around since the dinosaurs roamed the Earth. It pretty much goes without saying that the Accord is going to outsell the Stinger. It's a proven car and does a good job at everything. It's not particularly great at anything - but it does a really good job at everything. You know, jack of all trades...
