RaceChip install challenges

Purchased RaceChip GTS Black here from Sal. Had new HKS plugs, K&N Typhoon intakes, and RaceChip professionally installed on Monday. Very pleased with the results. Very pleased. Car feels great. One complication was related to the RaceChip, the instructions, and their App. I believe it was frustrating for both Sal and me and I post this as an aid to future customers.

It could be the hurry to get the RaceChip to market, but the enclosed directions weren't for the Stinger and, yes, I did see the posted updates in this regard.

The BIG problem was the sync with the app. The instructions said the serial number/bar code was needed (makes sense) and that the serial number/bar code was on the cover of the instructions. Oops...no serial number on the cover. I did find a serial number and bar code on one of the parts (plastic bag), scanned...not valid. I called RaceChip in Germany (more expense) - they said to call the vendor, in this case, Sal. He was very responsive but wasn't aware that serial numbers were needed, nor was he given them. Sal said he would contact RaceChip and report back. Troubling that the manufacturer didn't give the vendor clear guidance.

In the meantime, I entered every number on the back of the unit...again, none valid. Very frustrating experience as, absent the app, you must raise the hood every time you want to change settings. Very disappointing that the instructions were wrong, or not complete, and that the company couldn't simply give me the code after I sent them the info on the back of the unit.

After a few days, Sal emailed to say that the number in question was on the plug connecting the unit. I tried this and, Yahtzee!, it worked! Thanks, Sal!

While I am happy with the RaceChip thus far, and really appreciate Sal and his efforts, I give RaceChip a generous "D" for customer service and their instructions. They need to do much better in explaining how the unit works, what settings are available on the unit, and how they interface with the Stingers own settings. These things aren't cheap and non experts (like myself) could use simple and clear information.

I've asked both Sal to ask, and RaceChip directly, to do something for me for the hassle. Maybe a hat? In all honesty, this felt like a "snipe hunt" and it doesn't sit well.

Love my car, and love the spunk after the additions. Simply, it shouldn't take a good part of a week to make a product interface and work as advertised.

You took it to a mechanic for installation?

I just bought a Race chip for my 2015 GLA 45 AMG and the instructions for that were also generic. So i im not sure it was them rushing. But mine did have the serial number on the instruction cover as it should.

Yeah I had the same problem with the serial number and the app but Rc was able to fix it.

Oppss! It seems that the new generation of Germans have lost the good reputation of well done to perfection (if there is)....sadly

@CJ21, unfortunate about the mixup, but it sounds like you got everything sorted out. I see you did the plugs and added the K&N Typhoon intakes. Did you leave the stock exhaust? Which model Racechip did you purchase, and what setting are you running it on? Have you done any measured testing?

No measured testing. Intakes, plugs and GTS.

It’ll all get sorted out, hopefully before my temp tags expire!

The serial number is on the RaceChip next to the barcode.
E.g. on the GTS Black + App for the Stinger the serial number currently starts with 76.

I am sorry for the hassle.
A lot of people in the US got generic installation instructions instead of specific ones. The reason is that we made different installation instructions for the US together with a lawyer. We started with the generic ones. Our IT accidentally also replaced all specific installation instructions with the generic one in the IT system/database... They are currently fixing the issue.

Still trying to figure out why you had someone install this for you.

Easy...had a friend (a mechanic) do the plugs, intakes and the RC for me at the same time. Not hard to figure out imo...common sense to me.

I would say if you cant work on your ride don't mod it. At least be there and learn if you are a beginner and learn the hows and whys.

Wow! I never said I couldn’t work on it. I just preferred to have my pal do it, in his shop, with his gear. And, I was there and glad you approve.

not everyone is mechanically inclined, nor have the time to do it. this isn't a '66 bonneville, most mechanics won't allow you to be near them while they work. and i am sure they don't need someone looking over their shoulder and asking a bazillion questions. well, they might since you are paying by the hour. also, have you seen what is needed to change the plugs? unless you have a garage, this isn't like swapping out your plugs, double parked on fountain ave in brooklyn. i have done my fair share of mods to my cars, from simple bolt on's to engine rebuilds and making my own roll cages and i don't feel like screwing up my new car. maybe after i have had it for a couple of years, but the mrs would have puppies if i started cutting up her car.

"Work on your own car, before getting mods"? Really? Not these days especially.

I have a question (totally ignorant, so be patient): A "race chip" is for racing, right? So if you go through putting one of these in a Stinger that has the 18" wheels 140 mph speed limiter, it will negate that? Even the 167 mph limiter will be banished for life? Please advise ...

not the speed limiter, i think that needs a dedicated reflash since it is tied into the 18 inchers. as for is it for racing, not necessarily. like having an exhaust bypass, you aren't going to be driving around like that, or, back in the day, you could just drive around without the secondaries opening on your 4 barrel. not as much fun, but it saves gas. its your secret weapon. either way, found out that if you leave the car in eco or comfort and really lean into it, it will switch to sport. the mrs is pleased because she can point out that she is in eco all the time, but when the dash flashes red, i know she is racing again. caught you sweetie!
