Radar Detectors / Waze Discussion

I use the Radenso XP. It is the best detector i have used to date. It filters out all the other cars out there and for the random store k band radars you encounter there is a GPS lock out for that location.

What about radar cameras like they have here in chicgo....?

That does look pretty good. I've never even heard of the brand name before...

Me either caught a video on YouTube about 5 best radars. Then did some research and started to compare. The gps lock out sold me. But i also love how the filter all the BMW, Audi and other radars on the road.

There is some significant misinformation going on within this thread.

1) hardly any cops use radar, most have moved to laser. Yes I know that most detectors can detect laser but by then it's too late. It's locked on by that point and they got you.

Absolutely incorrect. I live in MN and I detect KA band (and verified alerts) almost daily in and around the twin cities. I have detected laser perhaps 3 times in the last 13 years (none in the last few).

It truly depends on your state and it also varies across police departments. There are a ton of websites out there showing more detailed information on various states and what has been verified and seen. But please, no general clams here as I don't want people deterred from using a radar detector just because they can't offer much protection for laser.

Trust me, all these theories and tricks and techniques you guys are throwing around DON'T WORK against an officer running LIDAR. Outside of an active jammer, which are 100% illegal in the U.S. and WILL get you arrested, the only real way of beating the laser is observant driving of traffic up ahead so that you can slow down before you get into the optimal range of being targeted.

Regarding the statement "Outside of an active jammer, which are 100% illegal in the U.S. and WILL get you arrested", this is absolutely incorrect. Laser jammers/shifters are NOT illegal across the entire U.S. It varies state by state. To my knowledge there is no federal law that makes these devices illegal. Each state can decide and many states allow them (or more specifically, do not have laws against them). The information is widely available.

What we really need is radar detector detector detectors... I just thought of a new idea for a website. :p

These already exist :)

There are I think 4 radar detectors that are immune to detector detectors and also alert you to their presence. I believe one type is VG2 detection and there's another. But, these 4 detectors do notify you when they detect a cop using a detector detector. I'm not certain if the other radar detectors actually alert you to these though but there are 4 that do.

Just noting that I tried Waze with Android Auto in my car and it's really great! This is going to change things for the Waze app and community BIG time - because now it's extremely easy to mark locations with the various options - where as before, it was dangerous to do so. I guess unless you had your phone propped up on the dash - but most people don't have that. Now it's a no brainer to use Waze while driving...

So is it safe to assume that using Waze via AA does not work seamlessly with the head's up display navigation? i.e. Is the HUD navigation prompts only displayed when using the car's native navigation. I'm planning to get a GT2 and it sounds like using Waze might be prudent, but just wondering how well integrated it is in the Stinger.

Correct, waze directions will not be displayed on the hud. I end up doing both, car nav and waze via aa, this way car nav shows on the HUD and I can keep track of traffic and other things via AA/waze on the main screen.

Thanks. So do you start the native car navigation and then launch AA and start Waze and leave it like that? Or do you have to put your destination into Waze too?

Also, how easy (or cumbersome) is it to do other things on the screen while AA is running? i.e. Does the AA/Waze pretty much have to stay visible on screen in order to function?

Sorry for all the Qs :D

Please cite your source for laser jammers being 100% illegal in the US. Only radar jammers are illegal, not laser jammers.

Dude I could have sworn you corrected me 2 months ago. I was confusing radar jammer with laser jammers. You win, sheesh.

To answer the 2nd part first, I have s7 edge, so not sure how other phones work. However, once I plug my phone in, the phone goes into AA mode. To get access to the phone, you just hit the Applications button (on left of the home button), and all the apps will appear. Tap of a particular app (messages, email, whatever) then hit the back button (right of the home button) until you are on your home screen. Now you have access to full use of phone while AA is doing its thing (Waze, spotify, whatever..) on the car screen. Just DON'T hit the home button, otherwise, it will dump you back to AA screen and you have to go through the process again, to gain access.

Regarding your first question, I only do this once in a while, but the flow for me is -- I plug my phone in, got to vehicle maps app, put in my destination, have it calculate route and wait for things to appear on HUD. Then I'll go into waze and put the destination in and let it calculate route. My intention is always to follow Waze routing, so I always make sure the HUD next turn matches the Waze next turn. This overall works, until you get into a multiple quick turn situation, but by that time, both routes are generally the same.

You don.t have to put the destination in Waze, however, I believe you have to put in the destination into Waze to get proactive cop / hazard alerts, otherwise you just see the icons on the screen. Plus I like waze directions better then car nav directions, since waze is always current.

BTW, I do all this only for destinations I haven't been to before or am stressed about, otherwise, I just do waze and not worry about the Car Nav.

My experience: I started using radar detectors back in the good ol' x-band days when they'd leave it on and you could pick 'em up around corners and over hills from 4 miles away. I have not tried laser jammers because I don't think you can jam fast enough - but maybe I just don't know enough about the current tech.. plus I don't want to piss-off the local authorities. I've been using my current Escort detector (radar and laser) for years now. It still 'works' but it's not as effective as it used to be. If you're in moderate-to-heavier traffic - forget it. You get way too many false-positives from other cars' sensors. It 'works' when you are on the open road AND you are watching like a hawk. When you see "the boys" and/or the detector squeals, hit the binders NOW! It'll give you a second or two - hopefully get you close enough to the posted speed as-to not land you an over-nighter in the local pokey.

I use both Waze and a Uniden R3. Together, it is great. I find most police in the Midwest and south east (all the way to Florida) use KA. I rarely ever have laser or K get triggered. The KA will 'chirp' once on the highway...slow down...then more 'chirps'...a cop 1-2 miles ahead. ;)

With the R3, you can block out areas (using GPS) where you get false K band alarms. This is the best radar detector I've ever owned.

I debated over getting a radar detector for several months. I watched numerous videos and read too many reviews. But now, I can't image going on a road trip without it now. It isn't a guarantee, but it is a piece of mind and greatly reduces your odds of a ticket.

I hard-wired mine into the mirror wires and use a mirror mount. It looks great!

I run the Escort IX and love it. My father has the Valentine and it does nothing but false alerts, and beep constantly.

Uniden R3 + Waze.

R3 has saved me plenty times on deserted roads, or late nights where Wazers are far and few. Waze is amazing, but it needs active participants to update. A radar detector is always looking out. Yes, it's not very effective against laser, BUT, you don't have to worry about laser at night, bad weather, or cold. I've only seen laser used on nice sunny days by the fare weather 5-0. 90% of the time it's KA her in New England.
