3.3TT Lets talk about turbo failures

I have pretty much the same sound. Only “mods” are AEM drop in filters. I have noticed its sometimes difficult to record the sound. It gets drowned out under wot and launch control. It was even drowned out when I ran K&N intakes.

I would be very surprised if its the sound of turbo going out. I checked every single hose and clamp, there is no turbo play or any fin damage either.

Ok. I've uploaded a short video of my car making the whistling noise. You have to turn up the volume to hear it. As a recap, it only occurs when driving and accelerating. The noise begins when the turbo gauge begins to register at about 2,300 rpm. If in neutral I can rev the engine and no whistling noise. Let me know what you think it is.

finally, I have found you : o ))) I have found your video on youtube with turned off comments. My car (3.3 V6, 082022) has approx. 2500 km (1500 miles) and a very similar (pretty much the same) sound -> the gentle whistling noise (acceleration) 2000-3000 rpm. I hope it is normal as both DoctorStiches and dealer said > o ]]

Driving home last night at 70 mph the engine suddenly lost power and went into what I assume is "limp mode". I slowed down, took the next exit off the motorway, pulled into a layby and called a recovery service to get me home. No idea what went wrong, but while waiting for recovery I noticed a strong smell of oil around the vehicle. Does that sound like a blown turbo?

Limp mode could happen from several things. Were you under WOT at the time? Smelling oil definitely isnt a good thing, but doesnt nessesarily point to a turbo issue. Did you see oil anywhere and did you check your oil level?

If oil is coming out your exhaust pipe, then yea, the seals are gone.

No I didn't see oil anywhere and yes the oil level is OK. The good news is that a mechanic I know with an OBD analyzer connected it, looked at and cleared the errors (nothing to get excited about) and now the car runs fine and no errors showed up on an a 20 min run. He thinks the oil smell (if that is what I was smelling) may have been due to the car being in limp mode.

He thinks that limp mode may have been activated because the exhaust system warning light was on for too long and may indicate a faulty sensor or something wrong with one of the catalytic converters. Now I know that that light can come on sometimes (and often did with my previous Stinger (a 2.0 GT-Line S petrol, which got stolen) and the recommendation is to run the car for >30 mins at >50 mph, which I always did and it always cleared it, but this time (the first time it's happened on my new 3.3 liter V6) it did not, so it's possible that he is correct.

Yankee acronym for "wide open throttle", which can mean to the floor without pushing the kickdown switch, or otherwise, to different people.

Ah, thanks. No, I was doing exactly 70 mph on cruise control in eco mode and I felt the power drop so took back control.

All seems fine. I did exactly the same journey on Sunday with the emissions light still on, expectiong it to go into limp mode again. Got to the place where it went into limp mode last week and the emissions light suddenly went out. Weird.
