I have a 2023 Stinger GT2 RWD and I have a question about the oil change interval. My 2014 Tundra has almost 200k and I have always changed the oil every 5k miles and I have never based it on any time frame (I run full synthetic). The Kia dealership here in Kingwood, Texas is saying that I should change the oil every 5k miles OR every 6 months, whichever comes first. I run full synthetic in the Stinger ... so my question is "do I need to change the oil every 6 months or am I good to only change it based on the 5k mile interval (like I do on my Tundra)?"

5000, miles unless you doing stop and go traffic for 6 months

The time-based guidelines are there so you don't let the same oil sit forever. Whether you go 3k, 5k, 6k with filter every other, once every 6 months, or once a year, it's not going to make a ton of difference for your 2023 as long as you're consistent and keep at it.

On such a new car nothing terrible would happen if you kept the oil in it for 2 years and minimal miles, the same way you could probably get away with a 7500 or 10k mile interval, but I'd aim for at least once a year just for peace of mind if you're not logging enough miles to hit the 5k interval.

I drive ~4-5K mi/yr. Do oil changes annually with synthetic oil (0w30). It would be expensive and wasteful to do it every 6 months in my use case.

kia uses full synthetic. in my opinion the insistence on a time interval be it six months or a year is just the service side making extra money. I go by miles. but if the time comes that months pass faster than miles I'll probably do oil changes every year and some. I do not sit in traffic so the miles are virtually all easy miles.

Thanks for everyone's input ... I appreciate it. I am proud to own such a fantastic vehicle and be part of this group.

same here ... working from home, i might even be closer to 4k/year now. once a year has been what i've done with the previous car.

did my first oil change yesterday at less than 3k, because i started to wonder if the dealer used synthetic or cheaped out with conventional oil when i bought it LOL.

i used an oil extractor, but the filter is still a PITA. someone needs to make an oil filter relocation kit for this car ...

Also, my dealer recommends an 'oil additive to help prevent against seals drying out' ... anyone every heard of that? I am always VERY hesitant to put something like that in my automobile. The only additive that I will add is Militec-1 when the car hits 10,000 miles.

I'd stick to your owners manual while you're under warranty. Don't give them a reason to deny anything. Once that's up you can be a little more liberal with it.

File it under "might not hurt, probably won't make a noticeable difference, might make you feel better". Unless your car is sitting for ages, the seals are never not going to have a film of oil coating them. And on such a new car, they should not be in need of any alleged re-swelling etc.

my thoughts exactly ...

combined with a spin on filter conversion.
These cartridge filters are a pain in the ass, and they cost more for some unknown reason.

my main concern would be - warranty preservation.

nobody wants warranty denied due to lack of maintenance.

the dealership here has a program where if you follow their maintenance brochure, they provide an extra $5k worth of coverage at the end of the warranty period ... one of them is changing the oil every 6k OR 6 months.

the factory actually says "6,000 miles / 12 months"

the 'OR 6 months' piece is not part of Kia's owner's book ... there they state '6k' miles
what book you referring to?

My 2018 Kia Stinger owners manual specifies every 10k kms (6k miles) or 12 months.
They always specify both distance and time.

'severe' driving conditions, all of canada, halves that distance and time. hardly anywhere is not 'severe' driving conditions, for instance coastal california because the salty atmosphere is included as 'severe' and the manual says every 3,000 miles or every six months between oil changes. I live in a 'severe' climate too, where salted roads in winter make the more frequent intervals required. but since kia went all synthetic I have bumped my changes to 6,000 miles / 12 months.
