So I live in MN. Heavy amounts of road salts and chemicals are used on the roads here. I was getting gas yesterday and I noticed this discoloration on the top of the filler neck. Could this be from spilled gas (which I try not to do but it's happened) or is this surface rust due to the rough winters here? My car (2020) was bought new here so it's seen a couple winters.

Reason I ask is I'm coming from owning GM cars most of my life (Pontiac specifically). Every single one of my Grand Prixs had major rust over time but a lot of it started in the fuel door area. Not sure how much of that area is metal underneath the plastic on the Stinger Should I be worried for the long haul or no big deal?

I have the same issue and I'm also in a rust belt. My car is a 2018 but has no signs of rust anywhere else. I think it's just the metal the filler neck is made out of. I keep meaning to buy some CLR to see if it will just wipe away because it's very much just looking like a surface issue.

Ok, glad I'm not the only one. It kinda shocked me though cuz the car is only 3 years old. Like you I don't have anything anywhere else.

I was about to make a post about this exact same issue. Mine has rust along the lip as well as on the neck. My car is a 2018 and it doesn't have that plastic piece that far up the neck and I have rust there too. I was going to bring it in to see if is a warranty issue.....highly doubt it is.

I just checked mine. It has just a tiny amount on the edge of the filler. I live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. But, my 2019 only has about 22,250 miles on it. Also, I drive my CX-5 as much as possible during the winter.

So clearly this is something that will be an issue down the road if not taken care of. I keep my cars for a long time so I'll have to figure something out.

Might also be an issue years later for used car buyers. I wonder if the filler neck is connected to any sheet metal on the body? Might have to unscrew the plastic pieces and do some investigation..........after the 6-10" of snow that's supposed to drop tomorrow night. Winter in MN, never over it seems :(

that looks like a small bit of surface rust. i'd tape up the hole to prevent anything getting in there and remove it with some fine steel wool. then wipe it with some Blaster Surface Shield or similar to prevent it from coming back.

if you aren't undercoating your car with Surface Shield/Fluid Film/etc. and live where they salt the roads, the underside of your car is going to look like a horror show in no time. frequent car washes (with underspray) in winter isn't going to cut it ... ask me how i know ... i learned that lesson 4 cars ago.

Car got undercoated at time of purchase. In the door jams and all but they definitely not spraying that part of the vehicle.

hopefully not rubberized.

Fluid Film needs applied every year. Blaster Surface Shield can supposedly last up to 2 years, but i'd still do it every year.

If you are able to get the plastic pieces off let me know. I unscrewed the four screws inside the filler cap but couldn't get it off...but that is probably a user error.

I don't think it was the rubberized kind but I honestly don't know exactly what it was. If I was describe what it looked like, well......I'll just say it......cum. When I brought it home the Mrs literally said, "why does your car look like it has cum oozing out of it"? Definitely not something you'd think you would ever hear in your life haha.

lol! so they put your car on a rotisserie and did a circle-jerk on it?

I have this too, I tried to scrub it off also but it won't come off easily. Isn't this metal aluminum which technically won't rust? Isn't this just surface rust on aluminum? I sprayed some WD-40 on there as preventive measure and cleaned it up abit but I could not remove it all.

Check out the pics I found of the FILLER NECK Kia part on the internet and the plastic housing that covers the very tip of the filling neck. I don't know if it's aluminum or not...

I scrubbed it off as much as I could, cleaned it up and sprayed some gray automotive paint on that tip of the neck that looks like aluminum but might not be.

I always assumed the filler neck is aluminum too. nothing on mine have attracted my notice yet. but I haven't filled up since I saw this thread, so, we will see.

Try sticking a magnet to it. If it sticks, it's steel. If it doesn't, it's either Aluminum or high quality stainless steel. Low quality stainless is also slightly ferrous.

Edit: Figured I'd give it a try. Sure enough, magnet sticks. Guessing it's steel.
