Hi there, my stinger has developed a ticking or tapping sound coming from the driver wheel area when accelerating slowly. It's quite noticeable. Has anyone come across something like this before?

I've read on here about that a few times: some posit that the caliper is sticking; others say check the brakes for stuck pebbles or similar; I had a very temporary thing where a small rock was inside the barrel and only stopped making noise when the wheel was spinning fast enough to trap it by centrifugal force (picked that up on a gravel road).

I don't think it's a pebble, I'm familiar with that squealing noise and it's not that. It's a rythmic tapping.

Funny you mention it i have the same its more of a rattling noise than a tapping i suppose it could be ticking.

Mine developed after the 50,000km service, its been back but typically they can't replicate it. Mine to is under light acceleration, before it went in it was also sounding when in gear and brakes on.That part however has ceased. Let me know if you find the issue as i will to.

Any videos of this ticking?

I thought CV joints usually start popping only while turning. They rarely make noise while going straight unless they're REALLY bad. And at least for me I've noticed wheel bearings are more of a hum/growl kinda sound.

Does the tapping sound speed up / slow down as RPM's go up or as you go faster/slower? Basically does it seem the tapping is consistent with RPM's, or with speed?

^^Never had a cv axle go bad but I suppose it makes sense.

OP, can you jack up the front half of the car and spin the wheels by hand? Might be obvious where its coming from.

These are the key diagnostics.

After I had my transmission replaced, I had a tapping/clicking noise at low speeds. Turns out a part of the driveshaft got broken during the trans replacement, so they had to replace the driveshaft too.

I would say yes it correlates with speed but only to about 40km/h.

Ok, so if it's correlates with speed and not with RPM's, then it's something along the drivetrain/wheels/etc. Does the sound go away after 40km/h?

Yes it's gone over approximately 40km/h.

Taking it in let's see what they say.

Some G37's suffered from rear axle clicking. This car has an independent rear axle suspension design (half shafts out of rear diff to each wheel). Here's a TSB on fixing that. My take away is there was inadequate lubrication from the factory?

More thoughts on this. It only happens when accelerating, not coasting. And curiously, it also happens in reverse when braking (not accelerating).

Nothing better to do waiting at the dealership. The process here is interesting. They reproduced the sound on a test drive but on the hoist the sound goes away.

One brake service later they still do not know what is causing the issue. Apparently I need new rear brakes and the fronts are at 30%. But noise persists.

Need to make another appointment, they want to use "bunny ears" to continue diagnosis.
