Could The Kia Stinger End Up Overshadowing The Genesis G70?

Hyundai and Kia may have a potentially messy sibling rivalry to deal with.

In 2016 the Genesis New York concept debuted at the New York Auto Show to rave reviews, at least from us. A few weeks ago the Kia Stinger stole the spotlight at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, earning rave reviews from us and praise across the industry. Mechanically the two cars are similar, with a shared RWD platform and parts bin. Styling and branding will be what sets the two apart. The Stinger had an ideal reveal, one the G70 would love to replicate. Is that possible, though? Or is the G70 destined to be overshadowed by the Stinger?

On styling alone this could end up being the case. The G70 hasn’t been revealed in the metal, but the spy shots don’t look all that promising. Gone is the artistic audacity of the New York concept. Of course that futuristic, four-door coupe design wasn't going to make production. Still, it would have been nice to see the G70 take some chances in the design department. We reserve the right to change our opinion once the camo comes off. At the moment, though, the G70 looks like it will debut with a mature yet forgettable look. Contrast that with the Kia Stinger, a car unafraid to show off its sportiness. Its quad exhaust and fastback roofline are the adult equivalent of the boy racer’s massive rear wing and slammed suspension.

In some ways I think it will. The G70 is probably going to be tame so the better performing car of the two will be the Stinger GT. The Genesis will focus on premium luxury while the Kia will focus on high performance. I'm guessing the G70 will have more sound deadening material and computer systems weighing the car down. The suspension will also need to be tuned appropriately to meet the expectations of the premium luxury car buyer. The Stinger won't have that to deal with. At least not as much.

Sadly, I'm inclined to agree with the linked article. No surprise to me, but it's looking like the G70 isn't going to have anywhere near the low slung proportions or gorgeous styling of the G70 concept shown off at the New York auto show last year.

no, it's just looking like a regular sedan to me. nothing special at all. but isn't that the norm for concepts? unfortunately.

Concepts are indeed usually over the top and not something we expect to materialize. The main point is that the G70 is looking like it's going to be dull and frumpy, and doesn't seem to have any connection to the concept at all.

Unless the the Genesis G70 has some special magic in the handling department coupled with a dynamite interior treatment - I agree with everyone else - looking like just another sedan. I also think the interior will be larger on the Stinger anyway - no other manufacturer has that kind of wheelbase in this class.

Where the Genesis will shine will be in customer service as KIA dealers are hit and miss in this department. At least in my neck of the woods.

The G70 is expected to be tuned more towards comfort than sporty handling compared to the Stinger. The G70 interior will almost certainly be a noticeable upgrade over the Stinger. The two cars should have the same wheelbase and interior space.

I'm not too sure either, the purpose and market of the G70 has become little more blurred. In regards to handling, my understanding is the Stinger is also not tuned for outright sports car handling either. In Kia's own words 'spirited long distance driving' and "nimble and fast while also luxurious and quiet'. The look however appears definitely aimed towards a more sport(y) performance car over the pending G70. I can't wait to own and drive one.

Yes, I think the G70 is going to be 'just another sedan'. But, I do like the design of the G80 and G90. So I'm sure the G70 will be a good looking car. I also expect the interior to be of a higher quality and customer service should be better. But let's not forget that Genesis isn't getting it's own dealerships for awhile and Hyundai customer service is also very hit and miss.

There are a few wealthy dealer owners who are building separate showrooms for their Genesis products but we're going to find these far and few between.

I'm on a role bringing old topics to life today. I think this is exactly why we're seeing a few missing features in the Stinger here in America. I've said it a thousand and eleven times - I think the car is still worthy of it's price - but there are certainly buyers either waiting for the 2019 or buying something else as a result of things like surround view camera missing. Then again, maybe it's something else entirely and there's no relation at all to the G70 at all...

You have the same engine options, same trim levels, same standard equipment, same built quality, same infotainment system, same leather, same transmission, same everything.

Don't know how that is going to work with customers, paying 2-3k more for a smaller car, and Genesis badge than the E-badge. Surprisingly the G70 has the same headroom in the back as the Stinger.

You're so lucky to have one a G70 to get so close to right now. That's a ways off for us here in the U.S. - Or probably anywhere else. Thank you for the comparison and information!
