That's my first question on the forum for everyone. I picked up a car a week and a half ago. Listed as a GT2 AWD and has every option to say it is. But it came with 18" wheels and I can't find anywhere that states they were available on a GT2. Any help is appreciated.

It is common/usual for an AWD to come with 18" wheels in northern states.

I think that that changed in later years, 22s come with staggered 19s.

Guess what else comes with AWDs w/18s...

A lowered top speed! 130 mph, IIRC.

Well that blows. Isn't the top speed 167? Changed due to wheel size?

Just think of all the $$ saved in tires.. 18" cheaper than 19".

Also, realistically speaking, where you going to go above 130 any way, or even 100.

In NC, if you get busted for 15 over they can suspend your license for 30 days.

Another commie state!

Indiana highways... You never know what will fly by in the fast lane here. Not that 130 is seen but 1xx seems to be common around here.

If the car comes from the factory with 18" wheels it has A/S tires and thus the limited top speed being less than the advertised 167 MPH. It may have been 130, but I think it is 140, based on reported "tests in Mexico".

149mph is not bad.

For some reason Kia opted for A/S tires with a lowered speed rating so they had to be electronically limited lower than the ones with performance tires.

Kia buries this information on the Stinger page of their website. But if you go to their main Stinger page, scroll down to the "engines" section, and click where it says "disclaimers" the below box will pop up.

This logic doesn't make sense to me. The OEM Michelin Primacy tires on the AWD models have a W speed rating which is good for 168 MPH. If you're going to have an electronically limited top speed, then why not the old German standard for sedans of 155 MPH?

Strong tailwinds, steep hills, lawyers? Who knows?

My S5's tires have a Y rating but the car is limited to 155 mph. That 31 mph delta is pretty close to Kia's 130/168.

My guess? Lawyers!

*Edit: just Googled the Michelin Primacy A/S. I don't know which version the Stinger has but there's one that has an H rating, which is 130 mph. That's probably the one on the Stingers.

I'll check the actual tires, but Tire Rack says that the OEM 19" A/S has a W speed rating. Remember, a can equipped from the factory with AWD and 19s has a 149 MPH top speed.

Your S5 being limited to 155 is the defacto standard for German sedans. It goes back years. Go look at any review for a German sports sedan from the last 20-30 years and you see the top speed expressed as "electrically limited to 155"

What's interesting is that there doesn't appear to be an option to have both AWD and Summer tires from the factory, at least not for 2022. I wonder if it has more to do with the transfer case and less to do with tires.

That's actually just a rumor. Lots of them are limited to 155, but it isn't a standard or something that they must follow. In fact, all three of the big German automakers offer a bunch of cars with top speeds in excess of 170 mph, with some even going into the 200s. They just make it an option that you have to pay for. It's more a money grab than anything else--they lock performance behind a paywall.

That is interesting. This is something someone here should be able to answer for us. Surely if there are factory equipped AWD cars that came with summer performance tires someone here will chime in. The fact that I don't recall massive complaints about AWD/19s like I do about the AWD/18s combination tells me it's probably just an 18 inch tire issue.

As far as I know all Canadian Stingers come with 19" summer tires, and are only available as AWD

I've said it before: AWD GT1 with 19" Michelin PS4 and I was still pulling c. 1 MPH per second when I backed off at 155 MPH.

I know that the rating for A/S 18" setups says "130", but I also know what I've read on here, with that setup topping out above 140 MPH. So, something is variable and doesn't add up.

It was never a standard that they "had" to follow, my understanding was that it was a gentleman's agreement between the big manufacturers, but that it has pretty much gone away. BMW is particularly bad about packaging options in such a way that you can't get the better engine AND suspension without adding in a whole bunch other options that add A LOT to the MSRP.
