Is The Stinger Gt A Little Light On Horsepower?

I'm sure they must be leaving a lot on the table but why doesn't Kia really raise the bar with the 3.3 liter V6? The Genesis Coupe's 3.8 liter naturally aspirated V6 has 348 horsepower. It seems a little light to me having a 3.3 liter twin turbo V6 only pushing 17hp more. I think it really would have been great to have the Stinger compete directly, performance-wise, with the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 with 400 horsepower.

Torque is where it's at, especially low end torque. And yes there might be cars with a bit more, but I would never say 376lb is not enough.

I see what you're saying because the Genesis Coupe did have a pretty powerful V6 and the Infiniti has some really big power. But I've been doing some homework and I think the Stinger, especially in GT form, is a good amount more powerful than the cars it competes with. For example, the BMW 440i Gran Coupe with twin turbo 3.0 has 320hp and 330 lb ft of torque. That's down 45 horsepower and 46 on torque. Isn't that a lot? The 2.0 has only a tiny little advantage on it's competitors. But the V6 is really outstanding in the segment.

don't shoot the messenger but bmw has been underrating their power figures for a long time. i think the bmw says the 440i does 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and i bet in the real world it does it even faster than that. nothing against the stinger, of course, but i think the bmw actually makes about the same power or more.

In my opinion no. The Stinger isnt low on horsepower. I think its very competitive. I dont really see the Infiniti Q50 twin turbo as a competitor but thats just my personal opinion.

Curious why you don't think the Q50 is a competitor, since I've mentioned before that the Q50 is probably the most comparable care available.

It is interesting that Kia would only give us a little extra power on top of the 3.8 knowing that, as mentioned, BMW under rates their engines. They're either afraid Kia drivers can't deal with 400hp or partner Hyundai won't allow it as the G80 isn't getting 400hp. I agree that the Q50 Sedan is a direct competitor to the Stinger so I think getting it's doors blown off by the Infiniti is not the ideal way to start. Then again, look at the price difference. Anyway, I think the Q50 is getting 0-60 times in the low 4s. It's an impressive car.

Although I do think they will remain in a more conservative tune rather than pushing for outright performance "figures". Europe is big on emissions and fuel consumption, so that is always a factor.

"Getting it's doors blown off" is probably a bit of a stretch. Yes, the Red Sport will be faster to 60 by a half second. But a ~35hp difference is going to be a small difference in speed on paper and even less so in first hand perception. I think most people would find that they don't care about that 35hp when they look at the extra $10k they have to spend on a Red Sport. That said, the Q50 is a might fine driving car, closest thing I've seen to my BMW that didn't actually come from BMW themselves.

Thats pretty interesting. I thought the performance was already set in stone because the Genesis G80 is using the same engine. I know its not impossible but I think its highly unlikely that the Stinger GT or G70 will have more horsepower than the G80.

LOL! Ever since Cadillac said the CTS-V was going to "blow the doors" off the BMW M5 Ive not taken the phrase seriously. Yes, I agree its a bit of a stretch. A half second to 60 is pretty impressive though and what are we looking at 10 car lengths in the 1/4?

I believe that Hyundai / Kia set the output targets based on other engines in their line up. Less so based on the outputs of its competitive set. The 5.0 V8 offered in the G80 and G90 puts out 420/383. If the 3.3T was tuned to produce say 400/ 410 the V8 becomes essentially pointless.

As far as the Q50 Red Sport 400 AWD's performance I have seen 0-60 in the 4.2 to 4.5 sec range and the 1/4 mile in the 12.8 to 13.0 sec range at 112 to 114 mph.

For comparison sake the 2016 BMW 340i xDrive (3831lbs) went 0-60 in 4.1 sec and did the 1/4 mile in 12.7 @ 108.3 mph. (Yea, it makes 320/330..........maybe at the wheels, not the crank).

Get the damn 5.0 up to 460hp so the 3.3TT can get 400. For God's sake I want more power. Maybe next generation.

You can expect the new "320 hp" 440i gran coupe X drive to do 0-60 in the low 4 sec range and the same for the upcoming "354 hp" Audi S5 sportback. That being said, I believe (and I've heard rumors) that Kia is saving some room for a future higher performance version of this car.

I don't know for sure what Kia's strategy is concerning power and how well it lines up with various competitors - but I do know they have a plan and they're sticking to it. They can surely adjust power to be higher if they want to so there's certainly a good reason for it being where it is. I think, as mentioned, performance is going to be a little better than expected and what they're saying. I'm guessing it won't be long before you find people running better times to sixty miles per hour and the quarter mile what Kia says the Stinger is capable of - even when those numbers are made official.

Thanks....my 550i is a bone stock N63 engine (4.4L twin turbo V8). Its the earlier version of the engine producing "only" 400 hp. From what I've heard, a higher performance Stinger would depend on sales of the 2 available Stinger engines, and of course demand from the customer.

Sal you're really resurrecting a dead thread here, but I'll jump in with my answer. They could easily squeeze more hp from this engine but with this much weight how terrible an mpg rating do you think people would put up with for a mid-size liftback family sedan? Where it is right now is about as low as I'll tolerate, so any lower and they'd lose me.
