HI all,

I may be doing a long road trip after Easter, and wanted your opinion on the best drive mode settings to maximize the MPG. Do I just put it in SMART or ECO and leave it there? Perhaps a specific combination in CUSTOM?

I'm thinking AWD in SPORT, everything else in ECO?

put it into eco and leave it there

In addition to above, no sudden throttle changes, don't go over 65 mph, no AC, windows closed. Drive as though there's an egg between your foot and throttle.

Yeah with light traffic and flat roads, otherwise the idiot "Smart" cruise control thinks its smarter than the driver and even on the least intrusive setting, brakes when it shouldn't and brakes when going down hill when gravity is your mileage friend.

Love the car but would like it to function like most cruise controls, control speed on the flats and hills leaves things alone downhill. Don

I don't have all those features lol! would be cool but I believe there is a way you can turn those off and have normal cruise control

this thread might help. didn't read the whole thing tho since I don't have smart cruise control on my 2018

NO!, WE (KIA) decide if we want you to have ability to turn these features off. We determined there's no need for end user control. LIVE WITH IT.

We're living in historic times. Cars made after 2017/2018 have effectively removed the driver from making many choices. Soon putting fuel (gas/petro) will no longer be an option either.

I'm getting comparatively max fuel economy in comfort (which I think is default) mode. And it seems to adapt very quickly if I decide to get on it, so rarely have to switch to sport.

My 2021 plain GT has no intrusive nannies and basic cruise. You get what you pay for, and in my case I get a car since I didn't pay for any of that additional nonsense. Adaptive cruise would be nice for true bumper to bumper, thankfully I don't see that everyday and not for long stretches.

Hopefully, that's deep sarcasm.

I despise nanny electronics and my biggest fear with my 2022 GT1 is that the screen that allows me to get rid of "Forward Safety" will die down the road with that nanny in force and the dealer can't figure it out. AAACCCKKK! Don

Sarcasm? Not quite. It's the truth. I want regular cruise control, can I get it? No.

Like you, I'd prefer the forward safety be permanently disabled, possible? No. And no to the next dozen things I want control over in the car.

^ 100. Ah, the wonders of the internet. Sarcasm that is instantly detected in face to face conversation may not show up on posts.

I've said it before on this forum, Kia should have either a master "Kill" switch to delete all nannies or at least the ability to selectively delete aggravating nannies w/o an involved process on the main screen. I'm sure NHTSA loves this sort of government overreach.

Even with Lane Safety and Forward Safety removed, there are so many bells and whistles that are simply distracting. Taking your eyes of the road with TX drivers is not smart. On one lane each direction, all to many say "My lane is mine, taking part of your's is OK". Don

The advantage that Eco has over the other modes is the ability to coast. If used properly it can add a lot of mileage, but requires mindful driving to avoid pissing off other drivers.

I've read that coasting is a capability of at least some of the cars. Mine is a 2022 GT1, how do I activate the coast function? Don

Go into your Infotainment System screen and push Setup>Vehicle>Drive Mode>CUSTOM. There will be a little box with coasting that you click. Make sure it is activated.

Then....

Next time you are in ECO or SMART (ECO) modes, and maybe even CUSTOM (ECO), it will automatically coast when certain conditions are met. Engine has to be up to temp before it will activate and a few other things. It will tell you in the driver screen at the top center that you are "Coasting" when you let your foot off the pedal.

Reference pg 5-34 in your manual for more info about when it does and doesn't activate.

Thank you maybe now I can get better than 16 miles a gallon.

The inability to set "off" as a default value for some of the nannies is due to safety ratings and the requirement that in order to get the rating the nannie has to be "on" by default. Same for CAFE rules regarding stop/start, it has to be on by default and only recently have most manufacturer's added an override button to turn it off once the car starts [my Stinger has such an option]. On my last Buick there was no override and I needed buy a device that tricked the car into setting the stop/start to be off by default.

The 'overreach' isn't simply imposed by the government, IIHS are a private entity and the NHTSA aggregates that collected data and eventually formulates policy from it. It's actually one of the few times private industry and the government are working in unison (and pulling in the same direction). CAFE is slightly different, as the government is clearly imposing arbitrary efficiency goals that most automakers are struggling to achieve with the tech we have (at an affordable price point).

I agree with what you said, it's still trash that shouldn't be forced on people. Up yours NHTSA, you're worthless and insurance companies aren't looking out for you, they're only interested in their bottom line.

Give me a "kill" switch for every nanny, it's MY car not yours government.

Yeah, I know about government, 21 yrs of active military duty and working for a national nuclear lab, pseudo military in some respects, for 17 yrs. Don

Some 25 years ago I got a camaro z28 6spd. It was my first encounter with a "nanny". It had a solenoid in the shifter that prevented one from going sequentially through the gears under normal driving. If more than a certain amount of throttle got applied then one could shift normally. Otherwise, user was forced to go from 1st to 4th. !@#!@#!@# If I wanted the damn computer to shift gears for me I would have gotten an automatic.

There was a simple remedy to this in the way of a simple resistor that got connected on the computer side to keep it satisfied. A cap went on the solenoid side. I had this mod on order within days of picking up the car.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/jet-61615 $15 or so back in the day. Overpriced for what it is, but oh well.

My G had the least nanny's of all. There was abs and traction control and that's it. Those usually stayed on.
