So this guy at my job called me out, saying he would destroy my car either from a dig or a roll. Didn’t matter to him. I said « Sure, entirely possible ». But then he went on about how it wasn’t « possible » but a « certainty » and blah blah blah b58 or something. Kept pushing me into racing him on the street but that’s not my thing so I proposed we race on the closest drag strip this weekend. Obviously he accepted and then kept messaging me on Teams about how he’ll gap me.

Anyway, in case it wasn’t obvious enough, he’s kind of a dick. Still, I’m a bit worried. I mean, M340i xdrive are no joke. I didn’t ask for this and I feel like he’ll keep being a dick if I lose to him.

As far as I know, he has a catback on his car and that’s about it. On my hand, I have denso plugs, aem intakes, velossa tech snorkels, ark mid downpipes, mbrp catback and a jb4. Last time I did a quarter mile, I ran 12.3 @ 113 using map 2 but I did not have any modified intakes nor the snorkels. I feel like the car is perceptibly faster now with them installed. Haven’t tried a quarter mile yet but my 0-60 has been improved. In fact, my current map 1 0-60 (3.9s with 1ft roll) is faster than my previous map 2 0-60 (4.05s with 1ft roll) without the intakes/snorkels.

I’m going for map 2 for the race. I was maybe even considering map 3. I do not have access to E85 here. Only 91 but I was thinking about adding some mmt octane booster like VP Racing or boostane. Do you guys think this could be doable?

Anyway, what do you guys think? Do I stand a chance?

It's going to be a really close race. Car and Driver managed a 12.3 with their long term 2020 m340i xdrive tester, so if you do lose it shouldn't be by a wide margin unless he has other work that you arent aware of like a tune.

you'll walk him ! practice your launches !! keep as much weight out of the car as possible ie run a 1/4 tank or less and get rid of anything in the hatch , let us know !! be confident

I’m pretty sure the catback is all he has. I overheard him mentioning that‘s all he could afford as of now.

What NS Stinger said. It's gonna be close. I think he'll be surprised either way it goes. Stock for stock it would be ugly but with your mods I highly doubt he's gonna gap you. It'll be tight. If he truly only has a catback, it's gonna come down to reaction time. If he has never gone to the track before he'll probably wait for the green. Just make sure you take off at the 3rd YELLOW. If it plays out that way, you'll have a car length on him from the get go and it'll be tough for him to catch you. You have nothing to lose here. He thinks he'll win easily, which he shouldn't if he isn't tuned. Good luck and I hope you can have someone film it!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I’ve been practicing my launch before his call. I usually stand around .40-.50 RT and I’ve been shifting gears myself as I’ve noticed it gives me better times when I shift around 5800-6000 rpm.

Yup I usually release the brake shortly after the 3rd yellow light but it’s giving .4s RT at best. Gonna try to release earlier. If he doesn’t have drag experience, I think he’ll accuse me of jumpstarting though. Wouldn’t surprise me lol

What's this? What is the GREEN light for then?

From experience, due to inherited 1ft rollout on drag strips, starting to accelerate at green light gives horrendous reaction times. The trick is to hit the starting time sensor right as the light turns green, which is why you want to start accelerating a bit earlier. Starting too soon gives negative reaction times, which makes you look like a cheater while starting at green gives 1.0+s RT which makes you look like beginner (nothing wrong with this, but you’ll end up losing against someone with experience). It’s about finding balance so that your RT is as close as possible to 0.0s without going negative.

I’m sure he will but it’s not your fault that he doesn’t know how to launch properly at the track. As long as you don’t red light there’s nothing he can really say. He can’t bitch at you for HIS ignorance. I’ve never raced my car at the track but I’ve been a spectator a few times. Those who wait for the green are usually toast unless their car is significantly faster than the other which his is definitely not. There’s a lot of members on here who track their cars and can give you a ton more info than I can ( brake boosting and all that stuff I know nothing about lol)but if I know one thing, its to go as soon as that 3rd yellow flashes.

Definitely the kind of guy who would bitch about it but to be fair, it’s all conjecture so far. For all I know, he could be a pro at this

Other than that, brake boosting doesn’t work as well on my car as launch control does. Tried it 3-4 times and wasn’t convinced. Now, I do believe that e-brake launching would help a ton but it’s apparently bad for the e-brake and the transmission so I’m not willing to do it lol

Practice practice and practice. Maybe learn break snip? But i wouldn't recommend using it over and over. Hence why I ordered lozic tcu tune.

Make sure your tires psi levels are on point.

Use race gas, especially at the track. Our Canadian gas is doodoo.

Also I heard off the lozic tune thread by the member Avant... Launching on custom mode with everything sport aside from AWD in comfort shaves off 0.1 time off your 0-60. See it for yourself.

And correct on the green sensor discussion.
Go when the third orange light goes off
don't look at the green.

Because your coworker called you out, you're going to subject your car to abuse on a track? Coworker a yout?

What psi would you recommend? I usually drop it to around 32.

I love drag racing. I’m basically modifying my car to go fast in a safe environment. He wanted to race in the street. I asked to do this in a safe place. I do not think I’m abusing the car doing so 3 or 4 times a year. I’m racing him because a part of me want to know if my car is faster than a M340i, which is one hell of a fast car. I understand you believe I am inclined to potentially break my car just to satisfy his callout, but rest assured I do not need a callout to go to a drag strip. I enjoy modifying my car and improve my times.

Coworker is older than me. Not sure of his age but he’s definitely in his 40s while I’m in my 30s.

Just have a go and whoever wins, wins.

Personally, I think you'll get done but not by much.

You got yourself a "performance car" to have fun with, you're taking it to the right place to open it up, so go enjoy the power.

Don't think of racing him, just think about what YOU'RE doing and keep it straight and on the black stuff.

BE SAFE and report back.

32 is good.

And Im glad you were more of an adult about doing it in a well mannered safe environment. What a moron in his 40s trying to race you on the street smh.

Stinger can hang and im sure you'll do great. Especially our turbos love the fall weather.

When is your drag race?

Is it a F or G 340i? They've turned up the sauce on the G series significantly. Those are much more of a monster, probably doing 400 at the crank.

What you should have done is agreed to race him from a stoplight, then when the light goes green, pretend you are racing, and then make a turn onto the side street.

Will do! That’s usually the mindset I have. Fully focused on my gear shifts, keeping the car straight until the end then braking safely. Safer than sorry!

It should be this Saturday. I’ll confirm with him tomorrow. Regarding race gaz, it’s a no go for me unfortunately. Best I can get is 91 and one of those 80 points octane booster can like VP racing. From experience, I can run map 2 on 91 just fine. Just wondering if map 3 is doable with a full tank of 91 plus the 80 points booster can. This would apparently give around 98 or so octane if I’m not mistaked. I would of course burn some of it before the drag race so that I arrive there with half a tank or so.

It’s a 2021 M340i xdrive. The one with supposedly 382hp, obviously underrated by bmw, as usual. Yup, that one lol

Petro 94 so far around me as been good to me on map 2. Map 3 on 91 may be tough, im not sure how itll do with the added booster can. If anyone can pitch in using it, would be great. AndyB canadian stinger uses boostane and so far I think he mentioned was good for him.

Anyways, goodluck! Report back. I 100% know he will mention you had a jump on him (if hes inexperience on the track)
