I have and love my 2018 Stinger GT2, but my issue here is that my wife needs a new car. The only car I can find that gives the most bang for the buck 'is' a Stinger. I would buy another one for her but she thinks it is too big and she is not comfortable driving it. My point being is that if there were a smaller stinger (say 3000 lbs area), put your 300 HP 4 cylinder in it, and keep all the bells and whistles I would buy it in a heart beat. You may say, is there a market for a smaller stinger like this? You would be in direct competition with the Subaru STI and the Volkswagen "R" both of which are good sellers with not near the amenities or looks of a Stinger. You would have another. winner on your hands

The K5 (formerly known here as Optima) is actually half an inch longer than the Stinger, and 3" plus taller. :P

elantra n with 275hp should be coming out next year sometime... hopefully there'll be a forte equivalent as well!

As a female coming from a smaller car ( Acura ILX) there’s no way in hell I’d go back to a similar sized and weighted car ( 3100-3200 lbs). Every time a car passed me on the highway, it felt like it would tip over. It was ridiculous smh
 
Veloster N might be up her alley if she wants Stinger-like performance in a compact package. 275hp/260tq, curb weight 3090 lbs, 168 inches long, and a 5.1 0-60 time
 
My girlfriend drives an Elantra GT and she absolutely loves it. It's a great size, fun to drive, and super versatile. The Veloster is another great option that you could consider as well.

A 3.3T in a small compact sedan would be a blast but I'm not too sure how well it would sell. I would imagine it would sell less than the Stinger and the K5 unfortunately. To driving enthusiasts it sounds great, that would be a car nimble enough to possibly take out the M3 or M4 but sadly I don't think we will see it get made.
 
I think the Golf R has quite a few amenities, I believe all it's really missing is cooled seats. Maybe a heated steering wheel? But it matches pretty much everything else you're looking for. Obviously looks are subjective you either like them or you don't. I hate the new one but I think the last few years are good looking IMO.

I think the Golf R has quite a few amenities, I believe all it's really missing is cooled seats. Maybe a heated steering wheel? But it matches pretty much everything else you're looking for. Obviously looks are subjective you either like them or you don't. I hate the new one but I think the last few years are good looking IMO.
Straight Pipes did a comparo between the two last year, they're pretty close. They tested a 2019 Golf R, I imagine that the 2022 iteration with more power is probably a really nice competitor.

wow. Actually, according to cars.com, the K5 is 2.9 inches longer than the Stinger. Color me shocked. It's within half an inch or so in other dimensions. It's a tad taller.

The K5 GT (FWD only) is also FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS LIGHTER. I guess that fake leather weighs less. Oh, yeah, sure, there's that whole pesky engine and AWD thing...

(Regardless, the K5 GT comes out at 12.18 lb/hp, while the Stinger wins that at 11.02 lb/hp.)

My plan A was to go for a 2022 Mk8, either GTI or Golf R--until they revealed the Tesla-chasing zero physical button interior. They can go screw themselves. I drive a car, not a fashion phone. That kind of interior is dangerous and should be banned from the roads.

That's one reason I think the Mk7/Mk7.5 Golf family, up to Golf R, will be remembered as the best of the line.

So, on to plan B. And I think it's interesting that H/K seems to get going after that VAG market aggressively. The Stinger competes with Audi S5, on downward to the K5 GT competing VERY well with the Jetta GLI, and I presume the whole K5 line competes with the whole Jetta line. And Hyundai is nudging in there with their own takes on that space, with the N cars.

A Stinger GT2 for two-thirds the price of an S5? That's what has me very intrigued.

Not exactly, S5s are smaller and faster than Stingers (4.4 vs 4.7 0-60 manufacturer claims. Both faster when tested independently).

GT2 w/AWD starts at $52590 vs S5 standard w/AWD starting at $52500. The S5 at that price will have most of the features of the Stinger minus HUD and heated steering wheel.

Moving to a mid-tier S5, the Premium Plus, will start at $56,100 and get you more tech/features than the GT2.

In my experience, German dealerships are more aggressive in negotiations compared with Stinger dealers.

I'd guess you'd have to get a GT2 for $34k brand new for it to be 2/3 the price of a comparably equipped S5.

You won't get a GT2 for $20k less than an S5 but you could probably get one for for the same price as a Premium S5 or maybe up to $7k cheaper than a P+ S5.

My 2016 Honda Civic had no physical buttons for the stereo and touchscreen. It did have physical buttons for the heating/cooling but I rarely ever used them b/c they could also be controlled via touchscreen. I didn't find it dangerous at all. I don't mind physical buttons but appreciated the minimalist aesthetic and futuristic feeling.

Might not be your cup of tea but it doesn't mean it shouldn't be allowed to exist.

It's dangerous. Look at the average driver around you. You don't want him taking his eyes off the road.

Agreed with the no button thing not being safe. How can you find a button on a touch screen and see a kid dart out? A couple of months with physical buttons and you don't even have to look to do what you want

Another big plus for me getting the Stinger was the 10 year bumper to bumper extended warranty. For a couple of grand more it's still cheaper than S5.

My silly assumption at the time I wrote that is that the "K5" would continue the same c. dimensions as the Optima. Why would that be a given? But, three inches longer than the Stinger? Wow! Nice that they took the roof line down. That much longer and barely taller, the K5 is going to look lower than the Stinger when they're not side by side. :p

A responsible driver isn't going to take their eyes off the road to fiddle with the radio while driving. An irresponsible driver is likely to take their eyes off the road whether they're reaching for a physical button or a digital one. Plus there are usually controls on or around the steering wheel cluster to control everything. Cars are also incorporating voice technology so you can bypass buttons altogether if you wish. And these cars have cameras and sensors all over to alert you about unseen dangers.

At the end of the day, it's more of a personal preference for the driver than a bonafide safety issue imo.
