Jeremy Clarkson reviews the Stinger

This ridiculous big-mouth billy-bass look is why many vehicles are crossing themselves off my list for after the Stinger. Genesis is one of the worst..

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
Honestly speaking, even though I understand the grill is proportionally too large and should never have been confirmed... I kind of like it.

The worst part about it to me is the fact that they've just got the license plate stuck on it like it was an afterthought.

The general public really know nothing about cars and this is why they buy these ‘premium’ European cars on this deluded existing perception of quality. The only premium they are getting is in the price.

Just another example of why 'premium' Euro cars aren't better than mainstream brands - objective measurements showed the Stinger could carry the most speed through the "moose test" compared to a dozen current model prestige sedans/coupes.

Stinger - 82km/h

BMW 3-series - 81km/h

Mercedes-Benz C63S - 79km/h

Audi A6 - 79km/h

Mercedes CLS - 79km/h

Audi A7 - 78km/h

BMW M2 Competition - 78km/h

BMW 4-Series - 76km/h

Mercedes-Benz A-class - 75km/h

BMW 5-Series - 74km/h

Mercedes-Benz E-Class - 74km/h

BMW 1 Series - 73km/h

Mercedes-Benz CLA-class - 66km/h

They've run out of good design ideas , put a Mazda badge on .............................

Wait, so the Stinger is better than Euro brands because it can dodge a moose at a faster speed? Who decided that a "moose test" was a good metric to use for determining which vehicles are best?

The Stinger is better than European cars in quite a few ways. I think we can do better than the "dodge a roadkill test."

I never said the Stinger is better than Euro brands.

I said this is an example that prestige brand cars aren’t necessarily better than mainstream brands. This example is the Stinger’s handling can hold its own against prestige cars.

No, it's a test that shows a Stinger can avoid a moose at a faster speed than those cars tested. I don't know how that test equates to track handling but my guess is no one is going to be doing a bunch of launches to 50 mph/swerve left/swerve right/hit brakes during a typical track outing. I mean, unless a moose wanders onto the track...

You would be correct that this measure does not translate to handling prowess. While the Stinger held strong 0-60 and 1/4 mile times compared to competitors including muscle cars, most of those vehicles were faster around the track. This is where the extra horsepower (not torque) and better track focused suspension excel. And feel free to not remind me that the Stinger is a GT and not a track car, I already know.

Hey that's not nice. I agree the grilles are large, but let's not deface the 8 Series, that's actually one of BMW's best looking cars IMO. Probably because it looks like a Mustang and I owned one, lol.

Branding is... well, just that branding.

There are Mercedes branded versions of the Renault Kangoo MPV and of the Nissan Navara pick-up (now canceled), as well as MB FWD models using Renault components.

The FWD BMWs are basically Minis in BMW sheetmetal.

The flagship sedan for ToYoCo is a Toyota (Century) and not a Lexus (LS 500).

The Stinger and K9/K900 are lux models (probably would throw in the Mohave in there as well despite being on a platform from 2 gens ago); definitely more so than the FWD Mercs and BMWs or all the FWD Lexus, Acura, etc.

The NSX in most markets is sold as a Honda (does that make the Honda-badged NSX any less worthy?).

The most high-powered and expensive vehicle from Nissan/Infiniti is the Nissan GT-R and not an Infiniti.

GM's 911 competitor is a Chevy.

The C8 is way more a lux vehicle than any of the FWD Cadillac CUVs, or even the Escalade (which shares its bones w/ another Chevy).

Some people have asked me why I didn't buy the Supra instead of my M240i, and while the actual fact is the Z4 is a Supra, for all intents, my M240i is a slightly slower Supra with softer suspension and AWD - same B58 engine, ZF 8 speed trans, and much of the interior of the Supra looks like it was ripped straight out of most BMWs.

Unfortunately this is the future of most sports cars, the R&D required does not justify the low volume sales anymore. I imagine the Genesis Coupe is a bit of a pipe dream right now. HKG could make one, but considering the yearly sales volume of Stinger sales and G70 sales, the cost of changing the roofline, safety testing, etc, if a Genesis coupe sold 20% of what the G70/Stinger sells, there might not be enough profit for HKG to warrant production. Too bad because a Genesis coupe would have interested me.

^ There was a 2-door coupe in the original Genesis roadmap, but not surprisingly, it was slated to be one of the last models to arrive (sometime after the GV70).

Really haven't heard much about it since then aside from it possibly not being an entry-level model (2-door companion to the G70) to being something a bit more larger and luxurious (GT).

If it comes to pass, likely will have a PHEV and/or EV variant (which means being based on the new G80's architecture) as Europe and Germany are making things a lot tougher on CO2 emissions.

Going back to the branding thing, basically the same model (just minor cosmetic changes) were sold as the Subie BRZ, Scion FR-S and (in most markets) the Toyota 86.

But then when the Scion brand was dumped in NA, Toyota just swapped the branding to match the rest of the world.

I said the Stinger did well IN THIS TEST. I did not say anything about handling on a racetrack. CLEARLY this standard test is about avoiding an unexpected obstacle on a normal ROAD, not a track.

You're rewriting history here, man. You attempted to use the test as proof of the Stinger's handling prowess compared to Euro cars. To be more specific, your exact words were "the Stinger’s handling can hold its own against prestige cars."

My point is that the " moose test" simply shows which car/driver can avoid an animal with the most speed. It isn't a test to show which cars are better handlers.
