RWD or AWD? GO!

I test drove both. Found the RWD hesitant on launch. Not sure if that was just in my head.

I live in so cal and wont have to worry about snow.

Thoughts? What do you have and what have you noticed after driving it for a while?
 
The RWD is a little slow on launch so you don't spin the wheels ... but it's 0-60 is the same as AWD. The AWD has more weight ... but a better launch. You could race them back to back all day, and one would win other the other each time, as it would come down to the driver lifting exactly the same time.

If you do not need the AWD, then get the RWD ... you'll have the same fun for less money!
 
I'm in Texas and got the AWD with the summer tires on 19 inch wheels. Liked the added control, smoother launch, and the feel that the car was just grabbing the road even in tight turns. No regrets.

I have RWD and the wife AWD - both. GTs. I do notice the AWD being a bit more “secure” and it feels faster at launch but would not describe the RWD as hesitant comparatively. We’ve not tested the 0-60 yet, I may have to do some of my own empirical testing to determine if feel and math equal one another. I’ll also say the AWD does feel more planted when cornering “aggressively” but I don’t feel the RWD is significantly less so. The differences may become more and apparent on different tires. These PS4s are quite grippy. In the end, like driving both.

Guess it all depends on what area you live in and what you plan to do with the Stinger. I live in the Washington, DC metro area and we can have no snow Winters to 4' snow. This being my daily driver, I opted for the AWD, but not just for the snow. I have a Mustang Cobra, which of course is RWD and is a pain darting across lanes to get into traffic. Sometimes you want to just quickly get out into traffic and the rear-end breaks loose or you spin on dirt/sand. So I really liked the thought of having AWD daily driver several reasons...including a sports car that can be driven outside of just Summer.

Does the AWD have more grunt off the line?
The 0-60 times are practically the same. The AWD gets off the line quicker, but due to the extra parts it weighs more, and the RWD will catch up those lost fractions of a second due to be lighter.
 
We only get the option of RWD in the UK.
However, coming from an AWD Golf R, where the ability to lay down power whenever you wanted at any point in a corner made it a tad boring / too safe.
With the Stinger, in the wet and slippery conditions we have here at the moment, you need to be awake and feather the throttle to get the maximum before the tail starts to move. Somehow it feels a bit more real and entertaining ...
Can't wait until the summer and use Sport + and turn the stability control off to really use the LSD.

From what I understand, takeoff/launch is a bit suppressed in RWD models in order to minimize wheelspin. The AWD launches harder, but as mentioned, due to the additional parasitic loss of power inherent in AWD vehicles, the RWD catches up. I hope that makes sense!

I chose AWD (GT2) more for handling than anything. I live in Colorado where we do get snow but it tends to melt off the roads in a day or two at the most. You probably really only need the AWD for snow maybe 10 days out of the year. With that being said, the AWD is excellent in the snow.

One reason I picked AWD was that I could get all season tires from the factory and not have to worry about switching tires/ wheels every winter since the RWD comes with summer only.

Second reason was that I do like the AWD as a handling enhancer. Since it's also rear biased and torque vectoring it's kind of the best of both worlds.

Finally, in theory, the square tire setup on the AWD (vs staggered on the RWD GT) will neutralize handling somewhat where a staggered (wide rear) setup would promote understeer at the limit. This is all theoretical and I don't know how much difference the small amount of stagger would make in reality. The RWD also needs the wider rear tires to put down it's power better so it is there for a reason.

I'm not into turning my tires into smoke so I didn't care about the drifting/ burnout aspect of the RWD. The AWD has enough rear bias that you can still get the rear end a little loose if you want to. I'm pretty happy with my decision.
 
I owned an AWD "sports" car about 25 years ago, it was my first after some experience with a few crazy FWD and RWD performance cars. I liked it so much, I bought the 2nd generation version without hesitation.

I've considered the RWD Stinger but after driving the AWD, it reminded me of just how much better AWD is during "spirited" driving, which is the reason I'm buying one - I ride motorcycles, the hills in North GA/TN/NC are my playground, and I can't wait to take it up there.

It's hard to describe in words but the simplest analogy I can come up with is that it helps the car track where it's pointed even under heavy acceleration.

Note these benefits are exaggerated in slippery conditions, which isn't limited to ice and snow.

So as much as I initially felt I needed the RWD option "to be a man", I'll go with AWD. I'm going to debadge it anyway, so my manhood won't be called into question...

I completely agree with AWD for keeping on track under hard driving conditions. And it makes a tremendous difference in rain...

Have you had the chance to take it up Six Gaps or Tail of the Dragon yet? Being a north GA person myself, and looking at getting into one from a new gen Mustang GT, the RWD vs AWD handling intrigues me.
