It has been a tough week in the Stinger. I need encouragement from the faithful. Haha.

Well, what started out as a love affair with my Stinger has devolved into something less desirable. Before I start, I will remind you all that I still like my car but I need to vent some frustration.

The first few months were great. Lots of excitement around the car, onlookers asking me what it was, "hey, that color is great! What color is that?" The very rapid acceleration comforting me after I hesitantly left my Lexus ISF. Then things began to slowly happen. Things that have slowly chipped away at my confidence level with the car, things that have sullied my experience with this beautiful and marvelous car. In an attempt to comfort myself, I find myself saying things like, "At least I didn't buy the Alfa Romeo." or "It is a first model year car, they can't think of everything." And to be fair, the latter statement rings true. A new experience that will forever shape how I look at first model year cars.

I am sure that my list of nags and nitpicks could be easily eclipsed by others on the forum, but I didn't buy their cars. I bought mine. As of now, there is no buyers remorse or deep regret but we are rapidly approaching that point. To date I have been affected by rear deck lid rattle, stereo fade setting not staying in the desired spot, blown right-side tires due to a pothole, brake pulsing issues (on the 3rd set now), cracking paint in the rooftop trim strips, LSD differential failure and replacement (no Stinger for 1-month), transmission park "pin" not reliably seating, wastegate screech, and most recently with an un-diagnosed chassis/suspension movement that unsettles the car during acceleration (noticed after LSD replacement). As of now, many of these issues remains unresolved.

Admittedly, the bar was set fairly high with a fairly sorted out Lexus ISF that put a smile on my face every time I drove it. After good experiences with two Genesis Coupes, I decided to sell the rapidly aging Lexus for the "future." Twin-turbo V-6, driver technology packages, Android Auto/Car Play, hatchback functionality, very usable back seat, and good styling, the Stinger checked all of the boxes. All but one... The "never buy a first model year car" box was not checked. I am glad that others have not had these experiences because the Stinger is a fantastic car. When "value" is considered, even more so.

So to all those with excellent examples of a Stinger quality and reliability, please offer up your encouragement as you see fit. I could use a boost right now.

Yeah that's a lot of issues...I can understand why you'd be second guessing getting the car. I might be able to help you solve one of your smaller issues with the hatch that I also experienced. Check out this video:

I also got a 2018 but luckily seem to have avoided most of the bigger issues you're facing. I was able to fix my hatch rattle, I have the wastegate screech but only at shutdown (haven't even mentioned to the dealer since it hasn't gotten very bothersome yet). I'm about to get my front rotors replaced by the dealer because of the the same brake issues. I'll be installing aftermarket pads shortly after to avoid it repeating ($150 out of pocket). But the LSD, paint, transmission, and suspension issues probably have you as one of our most unlucky members.

@NS_Stinger , thanks for the video. I'll give it a shot and cross one off of the list. I don't count myself as unlucky. I still enjoy the car, just not confidently or as enthusiastically as before. Let's just say the luster has faded a bit. I'll reserve the "unlucky" designation for those with engine failures, full body repaints, transmission/driveshaft failure, and those with the LSD that had theirs lock-up at speed. All in all, it's still a relatively positive experience for me. Let's see what the next 1.5 years have in store.

Out of curiosity how many miles do you have on Stinger?

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
I feel this. I've cross shopped other vehicles this year due to my own quality complaints (most of which I haven't yet pointed out since I'm taking a most severe to least severe approach), but when I price out a "suitable replacement" that I'll enjoy, I'm not willing to pay the premium that absolutely everything else will cost me when getting what I really want. It makes a guy wonder if saving 25K is worth a few issues? I had a ton of faith in this car, read a few issues from some users in mid 2018 and thought they were the unlucky few and that picking the latest build I could off the lot would net me the fewest problems, but I still managed to succumb to a few. If I can offer any input to your issues, it might help your cause a bit:

"To date I have been affected by rear deck lid rattle" - See link posted by NS_Stinger, I've heard this DIY fix works better.

"stereo fade setting not staying in the desired spot" -I know it's difficult but try to replicate this with your dealer, if they can duplicate, they'll install a new head unit and this should be fixed. Or, turn off Quantum Logic if you have it enabled, this fixes it for some. Or, hit the reset button on the button strip in the center....you never know.

"Blown right-side tires due to a pothole" -I don't blame quality for this, they're very low profile tires, I've blown a tire on a pothole before, it happens!

"Brake pulsing issues (on the 3rd set now)" -If you've lost confidence in Kia fixing this issue, just replace the rotors and pads with aftermarket and call it good. I know it costs you money, but that cash might be worth your sanity. Also, go heat up those rotors real good once in a while, it might smooth out or clean off the brake pad deposits.

"Cracking paint in the rooftop trim strips" -Go tell your dealer to replace the strips. DONE.

"LSD (Limited Slip Differential) differential failure and replacement (no Stinger for 1-month)" -It happens, at least it was replaced.

"Transmission park "pin" not reliably seating" -If this is the case, call it a safety complaint and it should get looked at/fixed.

"Wastegate screech" -I think Kia will end up with a fix for this based on recent rumblings, just need to give it a little time.

"And most recently with an un-diagnosed chassis/suspension movement that unsettles the car during acceleration (noticed after LSD (Limited Slip Differential) replacement)." -Get it looked at, call it a safety complaint and raise some attention with it.

Of course, life is short and if you're a car person and you're really not enjoying your car, honestly just sell it and get something else. No point settling for something if you can afford something you like better. If my replacement car existed at a price I was willing to pay, I'd be in a new car by now. The reality for me is that this is my fourth car I've owned from brand new and have become disappointed with, so I'm probably never buying a new car again because it seems none of them live up to my expectations. Better to live happy than in regret.

This is the first time I think I have ever agreed with literally all of anyone's reply. Haha. Exactly my sentiments. I can afford other cars, I just can't justify them anymore if that makes sense. If none of these issues (or far fewer of them) had happened, I would have thought I had the deal of the century. I started off feeling that way. The grin could not be wiped away. It doesn't help that I am about 30 miles/45 mins from my nearest dealer.

After several "nicer" cars, I am actually considering going back down the ladder. It seems that the more I pay, the more I expect (a true sign that I am not exceedingly wealthy). That being said, provided that all is remedied, the Stinger truly is in a class by itself. Finding a similar car with all of this car's attributes at this price is truly daunting. The Lexus was a dream though in every way but rear seat space and city ride quality (very rough). Around 400WHp as configured with Toyota reliability. I literally only paid for consumables the entire time I owned the car with no overnight stays at the dealer. Just the occasional recall work (fuel system, airbag) and a rear-view mirror replacement under warranty. Not bad for an M3/RS5 competitor.

Exactly, the Stinger really is a great car, it's just that when it falls short, it's not meeting expectations and leaves us disappointed. The reviews and Kia's marketing gave us incredibly high expectations, so really the issues we have may be a reasonable number, but none of them (other than your LSD) is a major mechanical fault.

I priced out an RC-F for curiosity and boy that's not cheap, I believe a little over 80K CAD was the starting price, 30K more than I paid for the Stinger. With it being RWD, it's also at a big disadvantage as a year round car, although I've done that before, but that doesn't mean I want to again.

People think I'm crazy for saying I'm going back to used cars, but I think buying a car with some "character" keeps the bar a little lower than buying something "nice" and new and expecting so much out of it, only to be let down either soon after purchase, or down the road. Unfortunately, cars degrade over time. It's normally the first door ding which is the major flaw I find in a new car and then it's pretty much considered totaled lol.

Minority report:
I have owned 17 vehicles, 6 of them new. The Stinger is a tremendous value, and I still love mine after 1.5 years/12K miles. The only issue I have had to deal with the yellow repaint, and I was very satisfied by how that was handled. Guess I'm lucky. Sure feels like it. :)

You seem to have the car curse going on Help. I feel for you. I remember the crap you were going through after putting aftermarket brakes on and having issues after parking the car for a few days. I am the king of having bad luck so I know how it feels.

I feel bad for you as you seem to have had almost all of the issues that have been mentioned by various drivers, all in one car. Be happy you don't have the sunroof rattle! <Wait, maybe you don't have the sunroof. :lipsaresealed:

I think it's a tough thing, as this is my first Gen 1 purchase and while my car is not perfect...it is pretty solid for me. For me though, I took a step up in car price and car quality. So my expectations weren't at the BMW, Merc, or Lexus level. Not that I didn't expect a lot from a $50,000 car, but I knew things would happen. I guess I expect even a $100,000 car to have issues. I'm the guy that goes to a top notch steak house and expects something to be shitty. If everything is perfect, then I look around to see where the camera is!

Anyway, this isn't about me, my car, and my steak. This is about a car owner who's car is losing it's luster. I feel for you. I can only say that hopefully you'll be able to get fixed what needs fixed and maybe find your way through to enjoying your car again.

I don't think you are crazy for going back to used cars. I purchased my truck CPO and got a crazy deal with a killer warranty and very low mileage. The last two choices prior to buying the Stinger were, the Stinger and a CPO Lexus GSF. The Lexus CPO warranty is fantastic, but the car was about as much as a fully loaded GT2 retail ($55k). I opted for the base GT in Ceramic Silver because the color, engine, and LSD were all that I really was interested in.

I appreciate the positive responses! Encouragement in this form makes me feel better about the future of Stinger ownership.

Yeah, I guess after driving Hondas and a Lexus one becomes aware that it is possible to own a car without major repairs being required. This is my first car of any brand (new or used) that has been to the shop for repair work. To be fair, it is also one of the cars I have enjoyed the most around town or on long trips. I'd just like to go a few months without a trip to the dealership for warranty work.

It is a 2018 model year.

Haha, I don't have the sunroof. Thank goodness! I think that if we can get the brakes in order and the twitchiness under acceleration removed, that would go a long way to restoring my enjoyment with this car. Until then, it is kind of like getting a date with Amy Adams and then finding out that she has chronic halitosis and bipolar disorder. Both treatable (I think), but not the ideal imagined...

@Helo58 I feel for you. Maybe this will help. I was in a similar position earlier this year with my 2018 Stinger Premium. I had multiple unresolved issues with it spanning over a year. While none were severe, I had been dealing with them long enough that I thought about ditching the car altogether and just getting something "simple." The problem was I loved the Stinger too much and there wasn't another car out there that would be a better fit for what I wanted. There were enough testimonials from people on these forums that their Stingers didn't have any of the issues my car had so I decided to give the 19's a look. Because the lease incentives were so high, it allowed me to get a 2019 GT1 for around the same price as I had paid for my 2018 Premium. Most of the GT's I test drove didn't have any issues, however one did. Bottom line...my 2019 feels like a totally different car than my 2018 not only because of the differences in the trim levels, but because my 2019 has zero issues (knock on wood.) The current deals on the 2019s might offer you a path to happiness.

I feel for the OP. I know how it feels to have the car you so look forward to getting and driving and owing have failures. I have been without my Stinger for 95 days now. Still waiting on Kia to send me an acceptable replacement. If they don't soon I will ask for my money back and move to a used Lexus.

I don't know what the stock levels are like in the USA right now but maybe act quickly if this is the route you want to go. I've been seeing quite a few '20s rolling into the lots in my area and the '19s appear to be getting sold.

I thought about ditching mine, moving into a '19 on a lease, but my dealer scared me off of this idea when my single biggest complaint, a noisy sunroof, also exists on the new cars on the lot. I don't want any of those lol.

Ironically that was one of the issues with my 2018 that has yet to arise on my 2019.

Someone on here should make a "checklist" of all the somewhat common issues a new Stinger buyer should be aware of and check for before making a purchase decision. :geek:

I would vote "yes" on that becoming a sticky.
