Remote Start!

Thanks for the information, everyone. So you don't need to carry an extra fob. That's not too bad then...
I think I would leave the remote at home one day and try to start my car with the key fob somewhere miles away. If the remote they install is good for 500 feet like they say. Trying the key fob anywhere within range may give you a false feeling of its true use.

Good point... Now I'm curious about this...

Are these remote starters dealer installed or factory? My dealer told me that factory installed remote starters require the additional fob because the smart key fob will not work.

I seen in manual that some countries have remote start feature right in the main key fob: additional button below "horn" button.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
Yes, some countries are lucky - some are not!

Btw, above you talked about UVO. I'm very curious on how that thing actually works, how your command received by the car, can't find any specific information. You said there's some SIM-card in the car for that thing to work, so car is a big cellphone always "on"? I see no other way to pass the command but by GSM/Cellular signal. Is there any monthly fee for that service? Wondering..

Yes it is a cell signal. Cost varies. Usually the manufacturer gives you x number of months for free and then you have to pay a monthly fee to keep it active.

The only real bummer is that there is no "take-over" feature, meaning that when I open the door, the car shuts off and I have to start it again. Most vehicles I've ever had required me to re-push the start button anyway, so it's really no big deal.. I just think it's dumb that I have to re-start the car. Hopefully with the auto-stop/start feature, this car has a robust starter that won't get worn out by the extra starts over a few years.

Wow, that's the first I've heard of this. That's pretty interesting considering every other model lets you drive off without the car shutting off. I wonder if there is a specific reason or if it'll be added next year.

My guess is it does this because it is a 3rd party unit. It has to make sure no one can just get in the car and drive it away, until it is started with the fob in the car it can't tell if it is a legit driver or not...

But other Kia vehicles have a 3rd party unit as well and don't exhibit this behavior. I almost wonder if they installed it weirdly. From what I've read, these other ones give you like 30 seconds.

Could be. Could also be the stinger has different technology the remote start doesn't play well with.

2016 Lexus IS350 is the same way...factory and after-market. I suspect it's a function of the keyless ignition security, not the remote starter itself.

Not on all cars. In my kids new Jeep if you remote start it and then you get in with the keyfob, you just have to put your foot on the brake and hit the start button. If you put it in gear without doing that it kills the engine...

I'm just saying it's apparently not unique to Kia. It must depend on some feature within the ignition switch (keyed or keyless), which is effectively where the security is enforced.

Yes, that's definitely because of security and many others doing the same.

My GT limited (Canada) comes with complimentary 5 year UVO cellular service for remote starts and other remote services. Sometimes can take up to 30 seconds to start, but I do get a confirmation when the vehicle starts and can see the status of the door locks and windows and climate. That's really useful if I'm starting the car from a few blocks away without line of sight.

So just got the car back from install.. Nobody at Kia could really tell me much about the remote start, except that they thought it was a separate fob, which was disappointing. I took a pic of the second fob next to the smart key.

The great news is that remote start can be activated through the smart key by pressing lock and then the trunk or panic button (see attached quick start guide).

All in all, it works as designed. I started the car from about 150 feet away with the extra fob, and then the smart key. I'm sure the range is the same using the smart key as any other function (lock, unlock etc.). I haven't tested max distance, and I'm probably not going to as I feel like it would vary with battery power. No idea if the additional starter fob has more or less range than the smart key.

The only real bummer is that there is no "take-over" feature, meaning that when I open the door, the car shuts off and I have to start it again. Most vehicles I've ever had required me to re-push the start button anyway, so it's really no big deal.. I just think it's dumb that I have to re-start the car. The price quoted to me was about $575 for parts and labor. I applied a 15% off coupon for parts/services that was given to me when I purchased the vehicle, so for me it was about $530 out the door. According to the service manager, it took about 3 hours to install.

So there it is.. Maybe the first remote start. I'm happy, and tomorrow morning I'll be extra happy to get into a warm vehicle!

I don't know why they didn't make it like the Genesis with an app for your phone you could start your car anywhere you could be sitting in New York and your cars in California and you could start it .

Puddle lights included on GT2 or at least lights down from sideview mirrors and door handle. Also, remote starter is cheaper at Tint World, $399 with installation. Not sure if I will get it yet. Getting my windows tinted there tomorrow.
