Insurance trick to save $$

I’m not sure if this works for all insurers but I am with the RACWA. My other car a i30 SR was up for renewal and the price was high when I got the renewal notice in the mail, but the online price was cheaper. So I rang and arranged cancellation on the due date as the existing policy scheduled to expire 3rd July. I went back on line but had issues with continuing the online purchase which was $117 cheaper with the same insurer. Anyway I started again but this time I put my rego in so the cars details would come up, unlike the first time I tried. When it was finished it came back with a quote that was only $8 cheaper than original renewal they sent. So I went back in left the rego out and bingo the price dropped to the first attempt!
So when you renew don’t put in your rego just the make model etc, could save you quite a bit!

I got the renewal notice on our Mitsubishi Challenger recently - it'd gone up by ~$400 from last year. I called my insurer (Famous Insurance, they're a boutique insurer, I use them as a result of my CAMS licencing and CAMS official status) and they told me that they've found that daily driven cars are seeing too many claims, and so are effectively intentionally pricing themselves out of the market.

I found Budget Direct to be the best option - nearly $200 cheaper than other alternatives. And that's with rating-1 NCB protection and excess-free front and rear windscreen replacement. I didn't bother with choice of repairer - it's a Challenger, after all.

My Liberty is currently with Famous as well (and the track car has been with them in the past - it will likely go back to them again soon), but I suspect they're going to play the same trick there as they did with the Challenger. Unfortunately they don't do online quotes, but I'm going to start checking insurance options for the Stinger to see where I land...

Hey if you plug in the numbers with your insurer and this trick works for you, please post the name of insurer. i would presume RACWA is the same as NRMA?

Oh, another trick - once you get your quote, leave it for a few days. I started getting offers of another $50 off the price at that point...

Insurance ... it's a mugs game to play.

I find it best to spread my policies (17 of the *uckers, yes you read that right, not just cars though -- wife, business's, personal etc) across multiple underwriters.
Review them at least every 2 or 3 years.

God help me if I have to ever use any of them significantly.

So they are winning the game at the moment.

I used to switch around every 3-6 months. Then geico gave me extremely low rates. Whenever I get quote now they are thrice the amount. Sometimes I think about switching and coming back but feel I might get higher rates.

Anyway, I use my car for pleasure only under 5000 miles per year not everyday comute . That makes insurance premiums little lower.

I had GIO, AAMI, Budget Direct, NRMA, all email or call to offer another $50 discount if I took up their policies.

for anyone considering AAMi just be aware they make you use their choice of repairer. I have had this experience twice with other cars and both times had to go back to have their repairs repaired. There is no way i would let that repairer near my Stinger, Hence switched to Budget Direct this time around.

I'd suggest they put their premiums up a % so existing customers actually pay indirectly for the newbies $50 discount. I may be wrong, apparently I am...often . I'm going to use Comminsure (CBA) I got a quote via Netbank and without (new customer), price better by $350 or so as a existing customer, around $800 or so.
