Australia Bi-Modal Exhaust Updates

I'm also wondering what this on/off switch is about.

That switches everything off at that panel. Try it ;)

That red wire is called a fuse tap. They all look the same with two fuses on the end. One is the original fuse and the second fuse protects the device you're stealing 12v for. In your case it's the bimodal ECU and muffler valves. If you install a dashcam, it should be wired in the same way, just on a different fuse location.

You can't put a manual switch on that fuse tap though because that simply turns the whole bimodal system on and off and not the valves directly (unless you want it that way).

If you want to control the valves directly with an on/off switch then you'll have to bypass the ECU by tracing the power wires from the mufflers (they'll go into the bimodal ECU) and configure a momentary two way switch between the fuse tap and valve motors. It's fairly easy to do. There's a few videos on YouTube of people doing the same with their varex mufflers.

By the time I finished work, and had time to look at my fusebox it was raining buckets in Perth, so I didn't get around to looking at it. I will have a look sometime in the weekend.
 
That's the same wire as mine, but mine has a plug and socket which i just unplugged rather than pull the fuse. I may be getting old but it sounds great when driving "enthusiastically", but would be a bit droney on a long trip. I've inserted a switch temporarily as my wife will probably hate it :(. It may not be pretty, but as an interim solution that "does the job" it is fine!

Later, if you're sure it's the solution you want, you can (hopefully) find a spare switch location (with a blank installed currently) and do a neater "factory-look" job!
 
Thanks @basysmith, I finally got the chance to test it out and it actually works pretty well. I will definitely need to install a switch as the exhaust can get loud and I don't want it loud all the time. It also defeats the purpose of having a Bimodal exhaust system.

On another note, any elegant way of installing the switch? I need some inspiration lol. I could just leave the fuse tap in place and insert a switch between the fuse tap and the socket of the red fuse tap cable.

Are there any spare "blanked-out" panels on the dash, where functions we don't get in Australia may be switched in other markets?

Yeah the blanks next to the seat ventilation controls, overseas have a switch there for the heated steering wheel that we don’t have, would be a bit of a mission running the cables to it from the fuse box but not impossible
 
I like this idea of the ability of switching the bimodal exhaust rather than fully controlled by programmed presets.

I am interested in the varex version of a bimodal style system though, I am of the understanding it offers manual control options (via remote, bluetooth module-app and hopefully a good-ol switch too) and supposedly some performance gains too.
Is there a separate thread discussing this specific exhaust?

FYI (for any future searchers) I found what I needed, re; general talk about the Xforce Varex exhaust system, on approx page 21-23 of this thread, starting from approx post #401.
 
Hi folks, sorry for the potentially lame question. I have the Bimodal exhaust fitted to my GT. the actual exhaust pipes do not physically connect to the Chrome tail pipes - there is a (noticeably,large) gap between the end of the exhaust and the tips. Is that right? It looks bizarre. Can anyone confirm what their bimodal exhaust installation looks like?

They are all like that bi-modal or not.

Agree above ,the tips are a part of the diffuser and the original has back plates to hide the light shinning through

Has anybody heard about the new bi modal Kia is offering?

I read recently that a dealer mentioned a new bimodal exhaust - but then I generally take dealership claims with a grain of salt...

It's normal, you don't notice unless you get right down and stick your head close.
 
Many new cars do this - they have a false exhaust tip (or tips) moulded into the rear apron, and the real exhaust tips are hidden underneath.
