Hello guys. I have a 2.0L Stinger with a JB4. Upon flooring (pedal to the metal), particularly on Map 2, I keep hearing a slight metallic gurgle (for about a second or two) that kind of resembles the sound of engine knocking/rattle. It looks to be just at the beginning of the acceleration from a lower RPM. I don't hear this on Map 0 (stock) and occasionally on Map 1.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be? Beginning to worry if this is engine knocking or a related issue (knock on wood).

Thanks in advance!

This is probably pinging from lack of enough octane. I would not run map 2 until you up the octane. If this is knocking or pinging it’s not good for the motor so I would not keep doing it.

+1
If you want details, then capture a data log when that happens and talk to Terry. The latest firmware captures quite a bit of ignition info, so you can tell if the engine is knocking.
You have the OBDII cable connected, right?
And, just to check, does the JB4 officially support the 2.0l? I haven't kept track.

Thank you guys. I've spoken to Terry about this and he said that he didn't see any major knocks on the maps. I just did order an octane booster to be sure (test it on map 2).

And the JB4 does support 2.0L, but not as much as the GT it looks like? Just more information out there and known for the GT.

Oh and yes on the OBDII. No CEL and no codes.

My car, having made several pinging/rattle noises under this kind of stress, should not be too damaged yet... Right?... Haha

Probably not but I would avoid it at all cost. My car would ping a couple times when boost was rising in 1st or second. It’s almost like the car was not able to catch it soon enough. Mine did not show much in the logs as well but I could hear it. After upping octane I have not heard it in months. You can also use map 6 and put in 2.0 in all the sections. Then you can still injoy a bit more power while you run out that tank of gas.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
As I said no sign of knock in your logs, but raise the octane, to see what effect is has so you know if it's knock/octane related.

It is good to hear from another fellow 2.0L owner! Thank you for your insights.

Did you hear that noise in question on Map 2 or Map 1? And changing the setting to 2.0 on Map 6 would mean 2 psi incremental boost (vs Map 1's 4psi) right? Maybe I can set it to 3.0, a compromise.

Thanks again.

Thank you, Terry.

I actually did couple more test runs and ordered octane booster to per your guidance. I had a bit more information for you which I added as a response in the N54 forum.

Map is 4 then tapers to 2.5 so i would do 2.0. I was getting it very slightly t map 1 then much more map 2. I’m a 3.3 by the way. Canadian has sucks.

Gotcha. That makes sense. Thank you so much. I might tinker with it and maybe do 3 psi to 4 psi and taper to psi to see where the threshold (against knocking/pinging) might be.

Sorry to thread jack to OP, but Adamdan, since you're Canada (BC?), what octane do you run? I also have 3.3 GT (Limited), and I am looking at a JB4. Just curious what I can actually get out of it. I've heard the rumor that Canada fuel sucks compared to USA...lol.

I run chevron 94 or shell 91 with no ethonal then I add ethonal to make it a e20 mix. I can run up to map 3 and even map 5. I find 91 octane with 10% ethonal will run map 1 fine. If you can get 94 with ethanol where you are you should be able to run map 2-3. Always log and check though slowly adding more boost. I think the jb4 is worth it even running just 2.0psi over stock in map 6.

Chyoon, what octane have you been using?
