Once you cut the mesh out, I used a small long flat screwdriver just to lift the edge of the inner guard, no force required, then I slipped in the mesh & positioned it correctly, it’s pretty easy, you will note that when you lift the inner guard liner it is stepped so the mesh will be retained within the perimeter of the opening. You may need to trim to suit, better to trim than be short, my advise is to cut a little larger than the template & work it to suit, hope this helps.

man I am having a hard time finding a T316 mesh here in the US that is not superfine. When I do they are super crazy expensive. Any body else from the US able to find a T316 mesh? If you could provide a link that would be great.

As I mentioned just a few posts ago, you can get mesh 5 (4mm aperture) T316 from Inoxia in the UK. I bought mine on Amazon.ca, but they sell on Amazon.com as well. It's not expensive, and a 30cm x 30cm sheet will provide more than enough to do your vents.

Here is what i used...worked well. I had to modify the template that was provided on here and extend the length on both sides. I partially removed the fender liner and was able to get an exact fit within the vent cavity. For the most part, this sheet cut easily with tin snips.

Thanks for posting that - never even thought about checking out other alloys. I just received my sheet of 304 mesh today, that I was going to use in the wheels vents. Tonight after looking up the properties of both, I'll be using the 304 as a replacement for the collapsed mesh guard over my BBQ's ceramic searing burner instead, and ordering a sheet of 316 for the car.

I ordered from Inoxia in the UK (via Amazon) - very good selection of products in both alloys and different mesh sizes, though their 316 mesh is mostly available in very fine sizes. Fortunately they also have T316 5 mesh (65% open area). I didn't want to go too small, and cut off most of the vent airflow.

Glad I caught this before installation. Calgary does heavy application of salt solution in the winter, and those vents are going to be coated in it a lot of the time. I prefer doing a job right the first time ...

Its the same mesh they put into security screen doors. Made from stainless steel. Just go to your local security door place and they may give you a small piece for free like i did.

Ok, so now that people have installed the mesh and have been driving around for awhile, does it really reduce the amount of road grime coming out of the side vents? Is it noticeable enough to warrant this simple DIY mod?

II used mesh 5, which is 5 wires to the inch. I also recommend using 316 stainless if they salt the roads in winter there.

it depends how fine the screen is - I didn't want to go too fine, as it defeats the brake cooling - the mesh I got passes about 65 percent airflow.

My main goal was to minimize passage of rocks and gravel spit back from the tires.

Agree on all points - you want to minimize all the dirt and rocks that get through the side vents but still allow enough airflow. So are you content with the results of the 4.1mm hole size you sent with?
