What on earth is this rattling noise? Sounds like it's coming from the engine bay (video)

Hi all, MY19 Stinger GT in Australia here.

Since I've got the car I've had an extremely frustrating knocking/rattling sound that sounds like it's coming from the engine bay:

I was assured by my dealership that it wasn't - they said it was a badly manufactured HUD, and replaced it. The knocking/rattling noise is still present.

At first I thought it was the instrument cluster but the more I listen and record it, the more it sounds related to acceleration. I might be completely off with this and it might be an interior issue, but I just can't isolate it.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm completely stumped and I feel like I've tried everything inside the cabin.

Did you happen to check your underbody engine cover? I had somewhat similar sound, and found one of the plastic pins were missing.
Just a thought.

Thanks man, but it wasn't that. Tried a drive with and without the engine cover, and the rattle/ticking remained.

Ugh, this is so frustrating

I would check everything in the two compartments under the hood (fuse panel on passenger side and brake cylinder on drivers side) to make sure nothing’s loose, or there’s a leftover tool in there. I had a rattle only to find my socket wrench in the windshield wiper area.

Also, noises from the wheel area can easily sound like they’re coming from the windshield area. Check brake calipers and the rest of the area to ame sure nothing’s loose. Good luck!

Hmm strange noise. Suspension/brake area is where I would check so I would take it to the dealer and have them lift the car so you can get that area checked. It's always been like this since you got the car? I was going to ask if you had any work done on the car lately.

It only started at about 55k miles. I'm taking it into the dealer for a full day inspection and diagnostic in a couple of weeks, so I'll report back what I find. The tech has seen all the vids and is going to check interior, engine bay, brakes and suspension, so fingers crossed

Sounds good! Hopefully it's something small. Hate those weird annoying rattle sounds! My first stinger had the absolute worst trunk rattle ever. It was so loud and annoying. Then my 2nd stinger as well but not as bad. The dealer replace some parts but nothing they did fixed the issue.

I think I figured it out.

I performed the procedure in this thread and it eliminated 90% of the noise:

It must have been something loose in that door frame trim piece. It sounded like something was bouncing around in the engine bay, but I think at certain speeds, on certain gradients, it would just make the plastic knock against the metal funny.

I used sports tape (psychical therapy tape) as we don't have hockey tape in Australia, and essentially covered the interior of both plastic door trim panels. I then used Nextzett Rubber Care Gummi Pflege on the top of the door weather seals, and that eliminated the last 10% of the noise, which was just rubber seal creaking.

Crazy that it took me this long to track it down, but glad it wasn't something major. Thanks all for helping.

Update: Not resolved, issue returned on the first cold, dry day we've had in a while.

Given that it's silent in the wet, I'm thinking brakes/suspension, but dropping it off to the dealer on Monday. Will update if I find anything useful.

Bummer. Hope you get it resolved!

I can't hear anything on the video, but I one time hit a huge puddle and it deformed the heat shields around the exhaust such that they were just barely touching the exhaust and would rattle in certain conditions. Once I bent them back up to where they belong it went away.
It was a clear metallic rattle though so not sure what yours sounds like

Well funny thing I had a squeaking sound coming from my right borla muffler area that started after I got the tips changed. Was just a bit loose hanger and clamp that needed to be tightened. Man if there is one thing that's more annoying than anything is figuring out what causes some weird sounds. Luckily that was an easy fix.

Good call on checking the heat shields around the exhaust. Never know. Where I live the roads are kinda shitty too everywhere, always have to be careful as i am lowered with eibach springs and sway bars front and rear. Much stiffer than stock. The worst are those god damn potholes!

Did you get the suspension looked at? I noticed someone mentioned sway bar endlinks in your youtube comment. Worth looking.

Hey I wasn't going crazy!

Was persistent with the head tech at the dealer (who's a very nice guy, his boss is just a jerk). He's had a ride in the car before and the noise wasn't present. Got lucky today, we both heard it, and he also suspected engine bay.

Left it with him today and looks like he solved it. He found and remedied:

- Three loose dash bar mounting bolts
- An brake hard line that had fallen out of its clip

Both of which combined to make an annoying, intermittent rattling noise from the engine bay.

The only advice I can give from this experience is don't let the dealers say 'Unable to Reproduce'. Hound them. It took me three trips, five YouTube videos sent to them over a few months, three rides with a tech, and eventually it got fixed.

Obviously dealers will vary, but as people's warranties are starting to expire, don't let this annoying stuff that's hard to DIY go just because your dealer might be difficult. Document and hassle them until it's fixed.

Thanks all!

wow. I wonder how the fixed brake line got loose. and don't get me started on the loose dash bar bolts. who on earth has been down there to loosen them?

Damm that's some odd type of issues! Well at least you got it resolved before it became a serious issue.

Hi all. I have a jingling noise coming what sounds like just behind the front wheel . I have been to the dealers. Who said they found nothing wrong. The noise is still there which only occurs on a rough road. It’s booked in again on the 11th. Anyone with ideas ?

Based on your explanation, I say something is loose.

I am wondering what could possibly be loose. I think I have checked everything. I have had the wheel off a few times cannot find anything loose . Or sounds like the jingling noise loose keys .
