I was told by the service manager of the KIA dealership I bought my Stinger from that I would void my warranty of the car if he was to put in Mobil One Synthetic 5-30 into it on my first oil change at the dealership. He said they do not use that oil. He said I could bring the oil (over 6 quarts) into their service and they would use it but any engine damage or failure associated with the oil would void the KIA warranty.....I have never heard of this policy and wondered if anyone else has.

Take it to someone else or change it yourself. I’ve never heard such b.s.

I have seen techs mention that Kia is very particular about the oil used on new engines (specifically warranty replacement engines) in order to achieve proper break-in of the engine. How many miles are on your car? If <5000 I would probably let them change it with a conventional oil and then run that until the next change. From there I would go full synthetic for the life of the engine.

If he is just saying no synthetic, ever? Well, that would be crazy imho. For the turbo GDI engine I will personally be looking towards a good synthetic that will better handle the turbo heat and have a low NOACK volatility (less oil vaporized into the PCV system and coating the intercooler and intake valves).

Is 5w30 the correct weight? Consult your manual, it will give you a recommend spec. for oil. make sure whatever you buy meets or exceeds.

Find a new dealer cause that guy is full of shit. Call him out then complain to the GM. That kind of information is basically scam baiting.

Edit to add: Remember, this battle has already been fought in the Magson act. Spelling? Which outlines the auto manufacturers CANNOT void the warranty solely based on the customers choice to use a non OEM part. Here is the verbiage from Wikipedia for easy reading, in part... "Warrantors cannot require that only branded parts(In this case, OIL) be used with the product in order to retain the warranty.[7] This is commonly referred to as the "tie-in sales" provisions...."

They CANNOT blanket "Void" a warranty either.

Further, If they DENY a claim....the Manufacture has to PROVE that whatever non OEM part you utilized caused the damage for whatever repair you are there for.

Yep, the weight is correct. Kia service departments just happen to suck as much as the dealerships theyre attached to.

I'm sure if they voided your warranty and they were blaming it on the Mobil oil.. contact mobile and they will put pressure on them. They don't want people thinking their oil causes engine damage and they will fight it right along with you.

Plain and simple Kia dealership/service BS. Tell the GM of that dealership that they are now blacklisted on this forum.

I always bring my own oil (Mobil One Full Synthetic) to all of my oil changes for all of my last 5 cars in the last 7 years. 3 were KIAs, 1 was a Mazda, and 1 was a Lexus. I've had no issues whatsoever providing my own oil for oil changes and not once was I ever told that it would void my warranty. Whatever they are telling you is absolutely bogus. For my oil changes at KIA, I bring my own oil and it brings the price down to $25. For full synthetic, they would charge me like $80 otherwise.

RTFM. The manual clearly states that engine oil should meet GF-4 specifications for both the 2.0L and 3.3L engines. It also gives a working ambient temperature range into which 5W-30 fits perfectly unless you are in Barrow, Alaska or Northern Siberia.

Mobil 1 is a GF-5 oil and easily exceeds GF-4 and Kia specs. All GF-4 and GF-5 oils are full synthetics which are required for resisting breakdown when lubricating the red-hot turbo shaft bearings.

What is the standard oil?
I asked my KIA dealer what oil was in the car from the factory, and it's apparently a full synthetic from TOTAL. Not a company I'd heard of before here in Western Canada, but on looking them up they are one of the major world players in oil and gas.

Total S.A. - Wikipedia.

Patterson Kia in Arlington Texas put Mobil 1 in for 1st oil change. The mileage sticker was "Kia/Mobil 1" too

Had my first oil change 2 days ago at 1200 miles at the dealer. They said they use Pennzoil Semi Synthetic to replace. I brought Mobil1 5w30 Full Synthetic for the change. Nothing was said about voiding my warranty.

Kia motors must warranty any oil meeting spec in manual. If you look Kia indicate API certified. Kia also allows many weights as well based on temperature in your region. Suspect Kia dealer is trying to scare you into only using their service. Mobile one meets Kia manual specifications.

Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic motor oil meets or exceeds the requirements of:

  • ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5
  • API SN, SM, SL, SJ

I went to my stealership a month ago and bought the filter for my first oil change at 2500 miles. Long story short he give me the 4 cylinder regular oil filter and not the 3.3 cartilage filter. I went back and exchange it and ask the service manager about warrant issue if any warrant void if I were to do my own oil change at home. The guy say just no, just as long as I have receipt of the purchase oil for my record should:D.

@Fred Pahlke I brought mine into the dealership right after the initial break-in period for an oil change and brought my own oil--Mobil1 full synthetic 5w-30. They didn't bat an eye and lowered the price of the change to reflect not using their oil. Sounds like you are dealing with an unscrupulous and/or ignorant service dept. Not sure what direction you'll head, but please keep us posted and if you feel ok about it, list the name of the dealer to warn other potential victims who might be on the forum as well. Thanks so much! :)

I got my 1st oil change at ~2k (I know, I know....it was late but work was hell) and told the dealer I wanted full synthetic. Right on the dam sticker on the window 'We only use Mobil 1 oils' so that dealer is fulla shit.

I appreciate all the comments on my initial post. I have learned a few things about the dealerships of KIA. I will be getting my "free" oil change with my dealership and will bring my own Mobil One 5/30 oil with me. I do finally remember they said they use TOTAL oil for their oil changes but I wonder if they are going to change the oil correctly. I was the third Stinger they sold and I have concern that they really know what they are going making this first oil change of this car. They sure gave me some bogus information about the warrant by using any other oil other than their own....I get the feeling they have issues. Again, appreciate all the comments.
