The engine is not more efficient on higher octane gas, it is just capable of producing the most power.

Not in the sense of making it more efficient than how it was created from the factory. The engine is not more efficient on higher octane gas, it is just capable of producing the most power.
It depends on the type of efficiency you are referring to. If one is referring to thermodynamic efficiency, running higher octane gasoline allows more aggressive ignition timing. More aggressive ignition timing increases cylinder pressure during the power stroke. Increases in cylinder pressure during the power stroke results directly into higher engine efficiency. In this arrangement, the amount of fuel injected into the engine remains the same, however the timing of the burn rate to maximum cylinder pressure is set to occur closer to TDC. This makes maximum power for a given amount of fuel. So the engine is more efficient and makes more power in this case. The engine is not more efficient on higher octane gas, it is just capable of producing the most power.
