Not sure what it takes to be a "crossover" (besides apparently more ground clearance) but latest R&T has a test of new M-B vs BMW crossovers. Both are blown 6 cyl, the BMW having a signature sweet straight 6. Cost base $60k+ and those 2 will get pricey when loaded.

Stinger GT has about same power as them and is a little lighter, maybe about the same with AWD which both of them have. The two crossovers are higher but don't look like they could hold a whole lot more. They both tested slightly faster than projected for the Stinger.

Looks like we will get a high performing hauler for a bargain price.

Which models are you talking about? The cheapest benz crossover that will beat the stinger is the glc 43. The only bmw I can think of is the x5 50i.

I believe the article the OP is referring to from R&T pitted the "love'em or hate'em" Mercedes GLC43 Coupe against the BMW X4 M40i. So 362 hp and 355 hp, respectively, vs. the Stinger's 365.

There will be a BMW X3 M40i for the 2018 model year that uses BMW's new B58 engine (along with some weight loss). It will have the same hp rating but will see an increase in torque form 343 to 369. There is a good change it is in even faster than the X4 M40i.

The non-coupe GLC43 gets to 60 in 4.5 sec. The X4 M40i gets there in 4.4 sec. So they may be "tenths" faster than the stinger. But we did see 0-62 in 4.8 sec with three people in the Korean Stinger, so who knows, it may be just as fast.

The glc43 and the non-m performance bmws are expensive... I would pay 20k less and be okay with the 0.2637373747 slower 0-60

Are you sure it's only going to be that amount slower. I expect 0.24981232 slower.

Also the crossover's higher center of gravity makes it difficult to make it handle as well as a sedan. You can put cubic money into the crossover/SUV design (and pass that onto the customer as Porsche does with the high-end Cayenne models) to help handling, but the same effort would yield a much better handling sedan. Straight line acceleration isn't really affected by the high center of gravity, so similar weight/horsepower crossovers should accelerate as well as the sedan. But give me the better handling every time.

Crossovers: Hatchbacks on stilts with lower fuel economy and a higher price despite having no extra practicality. If you're going for a German car, get the Sedan. If you absolutely do want a Crossover, may I recommend the Jaguar F-Pace?

Agreed

This.

This is very personal and subjective. For me, going from my Tiburon to the Stinger will feel like going to a crossover (in height). That's not helped by gaining 2 doors and losing the clutch. This is the closest I'll get to a crossover.

Yeah I'm with you. That's not the kind of difference I'd ever perceive by myself, and when was the last time a soccermom in an X4 offered to drag race you from a stop light?

Given the fuel economy numbers reported in Korea for the Stinger GT, be prepared for the same or worse fuel economy vs. these "performance" SUV's. Slower and thirstier...........but cheaper.

I don't think SUV's sell well because they are inherently more practical their their sedan cousins. It is likely all psychological. People "feel" there is better visibility due to the higher ride height/seating position and they "feel" like they are safer in an SUV than a sedan. Those 'feels" may not actually be true but it moves a boat load of product.

And then there are us old guys that can appreciate a higher seating position. Not for when driving but when getting in and especially getting out. It is quite a bit easier for me to get in and out of my wife's new Sportage than it is my K900. I tend to make the same sounds getting out as I used to laugh at my father for making when he got up from his recliner. It is mostly a knee thing. I figure a 3-year lease on a Stinger will be my last hurrah in a low slung sports type car. Hopefully, in three years there will be some reasonably affordable choices in some performance crossovers. How old you ask? I'll be 70 in Nov. and it will be the GT 6. I'm not going to put up with creaky knees for a four banger. :)

If you live in an area where everybody thinks they need a truck, driving a sedan puts you at a disadvantage when it comes to seeing past the vehicle in front of you...

Getting out of a parking space surrounded by "off-roading" beasts driven by soccer moms is not fun to say the least. This is why some of the new car tech I balked at previously now seem to have merit. Like rear cross traffic alert, surround view camera, etc.

My friends with Foresters, Armadas, etc., brag about visibility, but I don't notice that they are better drivers than I am. (And I always feel like I need to hang on when they corner.) In my sports sedan, I somehow always manage to drive three cars ahead, despite all of what I call the Armageddons on the road. Since I've driven only low-slung cars my whole life, I'm guessing every achy muscle and damaged joint in my body is trained to perform the slow slide into the low driver's seat. It's getting into an SUV or crossover that presents a challenge. So @jburns, hang in there, do some tai chi, and stick with something sporty as long as you can.

Now, if we can just give the behemoths their own parking area at the grocery store so I can see to back out . . .

God, yes. Over half the cars on the road in Texas are trucks, it seems. Screw 'em.

The upcoming Jaguar I-Pace fully electric vehicle is another vehicle we are watching. If the price of the Stinger is too close to the price of I-Pace, the I-Pace will be a better choice.

No thanx on any Jag, just don't want to spend that much time and $$$$$ on maintenance.

Went in to see the new F convert. Salesman asked if he could prep it for me. Told him I would buy their best on the spot if they would give me the same warranty my wife has. They lit up and asked...told them "Hyundai, 100k mi/10 yrs."

They sat back down and STFU knowing that such could never be given on a Jag.
