Should I Plasti-Dip my original KIA 19" rims? Is it worth doing?

Hey gents,

Was thinking of getting someone to plasti-dip my stock 19" KIA rims or should I just grab new ones?

This idea came to me when i got my winters (they are only 18's tho, recommended from everyone to go down a size).... but the black rims look so much better!!!

I've never plasti-dipped anything before, is it too good to be true? do they scuff up easily? any good recommendations in the Hamilton/Burlington (Canada)?

or should i just buy new 19" rims and sell the original ones?

Plasti dip is easy and cheap BUT it doesn't last along the beads of the wheels , when the tires compress hitting bumps or pot holes it will wear on the edge of the bead and look like road rash , BUT super easy to fix by smoothing the damage with a bit of pain thinner then applying more Dip ...................Been there done that !!

While you have your winters on, just have your OEM powder coated. I have used plasti-dip a few times. Easy to put on, but have never done wheels. May as well try it. But I would be afraid of it getting scuffed too. Plasti-dip touch ups are pretty simple, just respray a few coats.

If you did use it, make it thick and don't leave it on there forever. Plastidip gets brittle easy and its a pain to get them off complex rims like those. Also a great way to bake on brake dust on behind the spokes. You'd be better off with powder coating

I had plasti-dip on my 19" A4 winter wheels for 6 years. It peeled off really well but it was on there thick. I had touched it up once about half-way through with a fresh coat or two. It's remarkable stuff. Wheel underneath looked brand new.

Take a look at Superwrap. Canadian company, similar product to Plasti-dip but it's a true smooth gloss finish. Not grainy and rough to the touch like plasti-dip. I've done a set of wheels for a friend in gloss black and they turned out really nice. I also have gloss black on my grill, side vents and window trim of the Stinger.

thanks everyone for the info, i've decided to not do plasti-dip and now looking to do powder coating.

I got a guy (in the hamilton/burlington/oakville/milton area) charging me $350 CAD for all rims but with taking the rubber off and putting it back on and balancing it will be in the $600-$700s (with taxes).

I might as well look at selling the stock KIA rims and buying new rims altogether.

What would be a good price for powder coating?

I was charged $600 including dismount , mount, balance in U.S. It’s only worth it to me if I’m going to stick to same sized rims for as long as I have the car

The price where I had my OE wheels powder coated was $150 per wheel. Since I had just bought TSW wheels from them, they knocked $50 off the price of each wheel. But then, well into the job, they said: Oh, by the way, we have to PAINT your caps, and that'll be $25 apiece if you want them black too. Hah. Sneaky guys. I went for it anyway. :P

I have the exact same colour car and the exact same winter wheels. I agree the gloss black looks great on this colour but I found that it was nice to have something to look forward to in the winter, so half the year I have the gloss black and the other half the silver OEM wheels. Makes wheel changeovers a bit more fun swapping back and forth each year mixing the look up.
