Shift knob replacement?

I replaced my GT1 “T” style shifter with the one out of a Sportage/Cadenza/Optima. Part number 46720-D4200 (need to buy the one with the leather boot attached, as you need the clip on the inside). Installing is pretty straightforward. Remove the old boot and then pull up forcefully, but carefully, on the shift knob and it pops right off. Swap out the boot collar clip & knob and reinstall. There is some minor boot trimming and gluing/tacking of the boot to the clip to keep it in place but nothing too difficult.

how in the world did you undo the leather boot from the handle itself

i found the 2 clips inside but no matter what i do it just wont unhook
