So just got the car back from install.. Nobody at Kia could really tell me much about the remote start, except that they thought it was a separate fob, which was disappointing. I took a pic of the second fob next to the smart key.

The great news is that remote start can be activated through the smart key by pressing lock and then the trunk or panic button (see attached quick start guide).

All in all, it works as designed. I started the car from about 150 feet away with the extra fob, and then the smart key. I'm sure the range is the same using the smart key as any other function (lock, unlock etc.). I haven't tested max distance, and I'm probably not going to as I feel like it would vary with battery power. No idea if the additional starter fob has more or less range than the smart key.

The only real bummer is that there is no "take-over" feature, meaning that when I open the door, the car shuts off and I have to start it again. Most vehicles I've ever had required me to re-push the start button anyway, so it's really no big deal.. I just think it's dumb that I have to re-start the car. Hopefully with the auto-stop/start feature, this car has a robust starter that won't get worn out by the extra starts over a few years.

The price quoted to me was about $575 for parts and labor. I applied a 15% off coupon for parts/services that was given to me when I purchased the vehicle, so for me it was about $530 out the door. According to the service manager, it took about 3 hours to install.

So there it is.. Maybe the first remote start. I'm happy, and tomorrow morning I'll be extra happy to get into a warm vehicle!

EDIT -- NEVERMIND. I see in your quick guide that feature is NOT possible. That's disappointing

Our 2017 Sedona has the same setup...same remote fob and everything. If like the van (which I'm sure it is), once you unlock/open the door, the engine should continue to run for 30 seconds. If you get in and close the drivers door (others can be open) AND you put your foot on the brake pedal AND press the start/stop on the dash right after that....the car will take over without the engine dying. It has to be in that order...

Try it and let me know if that works for you! :)

I agree that it's sorta lame. When its all said and done, my actions are the same. I still have to get in the car and press the start button. What I care about, which is whether or not the engine is warm or the car is cool when I get in, is taken care of either way.

What I don't know (because I haven't read anything but the quick start guide) is how long the engine will run before it will shut itself off after remote starting. Standard is about 10 minutes, but I'll check it out and push the info here.

Thanks for the info! So I see that you can start the car with the normal smart key fob but do you have to carry the other one with you at all times?

thank you for posting this ihatecats. it's not the best but at least it works. like you said at least when you get in your car it's warm. and since you still have to go through the same motions it's only the starter that you need to be worried about. i think it'll be fine. i heard uvo may be available at some point in the future.

I agree with @ballistic. It's not too bad. Yes, I'd prefer to have everything done in one remote - like with UVO - but it's just not available for the 2018 Stinger - which lacks the needed SIM slow in the head unit. Maybe we'll get lucky with the 2019. Again, it's not the end of the world. Just a matter of convenience...

As I understand it, you don't need the other fob in order to remote start with the smart key. I left the additional fob at home after picking the car up, so I'll test this in about 30 minutes when I leave work.

I can confirm that you do not need to have the second fob on you to remote start with the smart key.. huge relief.

Hopefully we'll get lucky. That's what I'm hoping for, especially now that they're adding Google Assistant. I can't see them keeping this from the Stinger for long since it'll end up being one of their better selling high end cars I bet. I can see it easily outdoing the K900 and Cadenza.

How does that work, exactly? If you don't need the second key fob for remote start - then, I don't know, what do you need it for at all? I'm sure I'm missing something...

You don't need the fob per se, but it's just included with the remote start system which actually is required. I don't think they sell remote start systems with no remote.

Sal, when you register with UVO you provide
your email address
Password and
a PIN.

When you use the app to start the car, you are obviously not up close, so your smart key plays no role.

You input the email address in your app
together with your password,
then choose Remote Services,
enter your PIN,
a virtual START button will appear,
you press/click on it,
then you press Submit,
and if the car's doors are all locked, the car will start and run for a predetermined time, that you chose in your original set up.

Remote Services will allow controlling a whole lot of other things, like A/C, heat etc.

BTW, all actions via the app a recorded by KIA.

Any feedback to confirm start on the extra fob?
P.S. I bought my Stinger on the 28th and paid for this already. My dealer still claims to not have it in stock along with my puddle lights and mud guards.

Not sure why your dealer can't get it... Mine came in 4 days. I would try another dealer if I were you. Yours seems to be resistant to checking up on this for you.

And I tested yesterday when I was nowhere near the extra fob.. The smart key works without it.
