Hey guys, I posted not too long ago about a rattle noise that I thought was coming from my 2022 Stingers active valved exhaust, after more diagnostics into the noise, I can confirm the noise sounds like it's coming from the driver side turbo. Ouch... I can't seem to find anyone else who has had this similar noise that my car is making. It makes it whenever I rev the car significantly and when coasting and I can only hear it with the windows down or standing outside the car. I almost want to believe it's the wastegate. My mods are the JB4 with EWG wires and fuel wires, map 1 91octane, HFC mid pipe combo, and just K&N Drop in filters. Was wondering are there any settings that I can possibly adjust in the JB4 app to help with the rattle @Terry@BMS as I know bmw has a setting to fix their wastegate rattles. Otherwise any other solutions aside from a turbo replacement would be appreciated and if anyone has an exact idea to what this sound is and what caused it.

First thought would be waste gate, can you check the play on the waste gate arm?
Thats my first thought too. I will see if I can check for play later today and update you.

take the intake off, stick your finger in the turbo and see if there is any shaft play. while the car is not running, just to cover the safety bases

Good point, I believe the shaft is fine but better safe than sorry. I can stick a camera in there too see if there is any scoring on the walls. I will check later today and update you

Your down pipes could need a retorque. I usually do 100 and 500 after header and down pipe install. That would be an ideal fix.

I will give that a try later too. Those bolts are really hard to tighten as I could only fit a 1/4 inch ratchet in some areas. I did not see any exhaust leaks however but I will give that a shot. I really want to try an avoid taking off the downpipes and going back to stock to try an hopefully warranty a turbo replacement but I will have no choice if no solutions work.

I wanted to come back and say that I went ahead and put the car back to stock, removed the JB4 I had installed and also removed the HFC and mid pipe combo and went back to the OEM Primary and Secondary and confirmed the noise can no longer be heard. Did I get a bad HFC or something? I have not heard of anyone getting this kind of noise with the HFC.

I might be wrong, but i think stinger turbos needs some back pressure from factory downpipes for turbo seals to work properly. So, those aftermarket downpipes might be the reason.

Definitely odd. I wish I had suggested chassis ears earlier. Sound origins can be really deceiving.

I chased a noise once I though was a noisy right front brake, then wheel bearing, all the while second guessing myself that it might be the left side or even the rear because of how the sound would reflect off stuff while I was driving.

I used the chassis ears and eliminated my front diff, brakes, CVs, wheel bearings, etc. Then noticed a witness mark on the drive shaft and realized the parking brake cable was drooping down and lightly making contact. It sounded like everything but.

The ears saved me from part swapping to diagnose. Super helpful tool people rarely discuss.

Could have been a rattling in the cat if the core is loose.

I heard of the whole back pressure talk on these cars. Pretty much everyone on the forums has some kind of aftermarket exhaust when they run any kind of Downpipe which I would assume would cause less back pressure compared to me having the stock exhaust still installed. A lot of people were saying as long as you have some sort of cat you would be fine which is why I went with the high flow cat and kept the stock mufflers.

Sounds like you saved a ton of money. I actually do have an automotive stethoscope. Before getting the car on a lift it sounded like the noise was coming from behind the car so I thought it was the exhaust valves rattling. After getting the car on a lift it sounded like it was coming from the mid pipes mostly, assuming the noise was just resonating. After I finally used a stethoscope and the noise is the loudest at the driver side turbo and Primary high flow cat. I might have to get the stethoscope to the oem cat and turbo again right now while it's stock and see if there is still any kind of similar noise.

This is something I considered. I even messaged Ultimate Performance and they did say they never had this issue before with any of their products but still possible. I am not able to get any kind of rattling noise from the pipes with it off the car when shaking it. Might have to try compressed air maybe.

Stethoscope is definitely a good tool, but y he ears you can hook up and use while driving around using the headphones and switching between different channels.

For spots that the alligator clips won’t clip to I use zip ties or magnets if ferrous. For an exhaust pipe maybe a spare hose clamp.

I think I picked up the Steelman kit I have for around $90 after borrowing a friend’s.
