I have a few questions about the oil catch can 'mod'. Indulge me:
1. Kia has the GDI maintenance schedule. Is this related in any way to the OCC? Would I still need the OCC if I kept up with this service?
2. Does the OCC actually, hold oil? And does that oil have to be disposed of at each oil change?
3. Would a typical garage know to dispose of the said oil?

TIA!

I suggest doing some searching to get more complete and perhaps more accurate information. But the OCC is especially helpful for our GDI engines in keeping the valves clean.

1. yes
2. yes & yes
3. I suggest your own schedule so you can be sure it happens.

BMS has a no maintenance catch can. Set it and forget it. I've had it on for over a year. It catches the oil and recirculates it back into your crankcase. Set it and forget it.

As @MFNTRBO mentioned, there is the no-maintenance catch can out there which empties back into the oil pan. There are some who are cautious about letting blowby condensates back into the oil, but on the other hand I personally have never heard of someone who had an issue with that--even though I got the more traditional catch can. Your choice, really.

As for 1: I am reluctant to say you would still need it if you're having someone walnut blast your valves per the maintenance schedule, but it would help stop build-up in the first place which would mean an easier clean, if nothing else. I personally would still want one, for what that's worth.

As for 2: Yes, it holds oil. Yes, it would have to be disposed of--unless you had a no-maintenance catch can. However, I just dump it into my waste oil pan with the rest of my old oil for each oil change and recycle the whole thing.

As for 3: I would hope so, if they were reputable. As I said I just dump mine into the waste pan and I'm sure the shop would do. Think of it like just changing out another oil filter: You don't really do anything special with the oil in the filter/housing--it goes with the rest of your waste oil. Same thing.
