I was thinking about this a bit more. Try something like Meguiar's polishing compound first; but stop if it looks like it's going to change the surface finish; if the polishing compound doesn't change the surface finish (work only on the spot, avoid rubbing further as much as possible), and also does not knock back the scuff, then move up to their rubbing compound and repeat; if that doesn't reduce the scuff either, then there are other, more invasive compounds; but at some point the surface finish is going to change too, even if the scuff goes away; and then you no longer have a scuff: instead you have a larger blemish that shows up from every angle and all distances. So, does a scuff bother you enough to try? Things like this can wake me up and keep me awake. Hah.
(A similar issue is the spotting on the dark chrome running above the windows and alongside the hatch window. I saw my first two spots a couple days ago, and decided to try a recommendation I made, without experience, i.e. just what I'd try if/when I had to deal with it: and guess what? This did not work: I first tried distilled water and ONR with a terrycloth and rubbed; nothing; moved up to isopropyl alcohol, and if anything the spots got a bit more distinct: that should have been my warning, but, I moved up to polishing compound: the spots were definitely taking on attention-getting brightness, WTH!? Now I had two spots that I could see easily, that attracted my attention as I walked up to the car from the RR - this contamination is on the RR strip running alongside the hatch glass; so, my final "solution" was to try Meg's "Cleaner Wax", the paste: this knocked back the spots, alright, but also rubbing to take them out produced a lightening of the dark chrome, in an area c. 1" in size. *SIGH!* I extended the area of rubbing, up and down from the spot, intending that the brightness fade and blend into the dark chrome finish - and then I chickened out and decided to live with it; it's that or go to work on the whole dark chrome piece: then it will look lighter than the one over the RR passenger window, and so on, moving over the entire damn car!? I don't think so!)
