About 3300 miles now what sounds like a lifter tick for about 20-30 seconds on start up after setting cold overnight.

Anyone else with this problem?

Mine does this as well. I believe it's normal. The high pressure fuel pump also makes a bit of noise pretty much all the time as well.

It's normal.

There's something in the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) that clatters for a bit on cold start. I think it's a solenoid because I took my car to the dealer for this same issue and they showed me that unplugging the electrical connector to the HPFP makes the noise stop (the engine also dies shortly after from lack of fuel, but it did keep running a few seconds without the noise. It throws a code, so I wouldn't recommend doing it at home)

It will go away after 30-45 seconds (the usual DI engine "sewing machine" tick will remain, of course)

I do get a similar noise on my 08 Sky Red line 2.0 Turbo DI but I'm use to it from the very beginning now with 53k on the clock.
The Stinger just started doing this.

It is hpfp. Don't worry.

That’s interesting, my car had a spell of that (loud enough to concern me) around 3000 miles as well. After a few days it quieted down to a normal level. Hasn’t returned since. I did take it in to the dealer when it was loud, they couldn’t find anything wrong. So maybe give it a bit, see if it quiets down. Like others mentioned, the HPFP will always tick, so it will never go away entirely.

Ticking noise is normal.

Normal, but if it really bothers you, you can just give the throttle a quick blip at startup and it will go away.

2022 3.3T with 300miles. I get the same ticking at cold start. Goes away after 30sec. Sounds like lifter ticking on cold start …

Normal Stinger start up noise.

Good to know ... I'd been a little concerned myself with that noise, having only cracked 6,000 km a few days ago. *Phew*

Has anyone heard a Mazda SkyActive during cold start? Sounds like a chainsaw.

I thought it was normal but I took my car to Kia and it needed the tappets replaced and that's exactly what my car does

which kia dealer did u take it too? Mine are like "it's within specifications". what are the specifications? Decibels, duration? umm......... It's within specifications. clueless.

Having driven an old car with ticking lifters, it's understandable to worry about a similar clatter, because it doesn't sound healthy. But remember the HPFP is similar to an extra valve, located above the rest of the valvetrain.

Watching a few youtube videos of other HPFP/direct-injected cars idling may give you a feel for what's normal. And honestly the best remedy may be to remote start your car from inside because the first ~30 seconds of a cold start are the loudest

Stinger cold start where even behind the car you can hear it from 0:22-0:52:

Someone plugging and unplugging his HPFP:

A noisy Ecoboost:

A Tacoma:

All DI injected engines have varying levels and types of ticking, clatter noise. Besides that, the 3.3 V6 engine in the Stinger sounds very smooth and balanced when being revved.
